Featured Album - Antonis Antoniou’s Throisma Remixed
The featured album this week is promoted as an EP – but it has six tracks and lasts almost 30 minutes – so it’s an album as far as I’m concerned.
Back in October, Throisma by Antonis Antoniou was the featured album here on Around the World. Now Antonis has invited some of the world’s finest DJs and producers come up with an alternative versions and remixes of six of the album’s original pieces.
Throisma (Antonis Antoniou Remix)
The six tracks are remixed by Brazilian producer Maga Bo, New York’s Nickodemus, Spanish DJ Panko, and the British/Mauritian brothers Reginald Omas Mamode IV, and Mo Kolours. The sixth remix was made by Antoniou himself.
Antonis Antoniou is from Nicosia in Cyprus. He is the founder of the award-winning bands Monsieur Doumani and Trio Tekke.
Gao Hong & Kadialy Kouyate - House of Friendship
Gao Hong is a Chinese musician. She plays the Chinese instrument the Pipa. It looks a little like a loot.
The Chinese pipa, a four-string plucked lute, descends from West and Central Asian prototypes and appeared in China during the Northern Wei dynasty (386–534). Traveling over ancient trade routes, it brought not only a new sound but also new repertoires and musical theory. 1
Kadialy Kouyate from Senegal plays the Kora. The African kora is often paired with western strung instruments. Perhaps the best known example is Welsh harpist Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita the kora player from Senegal.
Born into the great line of Kouyate Griot in Southern Senegal, Kadialy Kouyate’s kora playing and singing style, both as a soloist and in different ensembles, have been appreciated in many prestigious venues including the Royal Festival Hall, the 02 Arena, the National Theatre, the Royal Albert Hall and Clarence House.
Since his arrival in the UK, Kadialy has played a significant part in enriching the London musical scene with his griot legacy. Kadialy has taught the kora at SOAS, University of London, for the last decade and he has also been involved in countless musical projects both as a collaborator and a session musician.2
Teri Kunda – House if Friendship is a unique collaboration bringing the pipa and Kora together.
House of Friendship is a song about companionship, where people listen to each other and express themselves with honesty. This is how friendship should be, and encapsulates the relationship Gao and Kadialy formed during the creation of this project. YouTube
Onipa - No Commando ft. David Walters (Official Video)
Shot around the coast of Accra in Ghana, where Onipa co-founder Kewku Sackey’s heritage lies, No Commando is the first taste from Onipa's newest album ‘Off Grid’ - marrying deep Afro grooves, highlife and pulsing electronics.
Afro-futurist band ONIPA is the collaboration between multi-instrumentalist artist and rapper K.O.G (Kweku Sackey) and Tom Excell, which fuses music from Ghana and London, alongside bandmates Finn Booth (Nubiyan Twist) and Wonky Logic (Steam Down) 3
David Walters is a French musician and producer. His most recent album is Soul Tropical
