Bob Marley & The Wailers - Stir It Up (Live at The Old Grey Whistle, 1973)
This time of the year, there are fewer new albums around and the charts are pretty slow, but that gives me the opportunity to dig out a classic album to feature on the show. This week, the album that introduced us all to Bob Marley and the Wailers.

A Cantadeira - DA MINHA PELE
“Cantadeira (Singing women) is Joana Negrão's solo project, a true “one woman band” and a challenge that finally makes sense in her career. It is also born in a period of imposed confinement and social distance and from all the impossibilities of playing together with his musical projects. Creating and playing music alone was, more than an expected route, a necessity for almost 20 years playing in various projects with other musicians.
“After accumulating performative experience, composition and research in her projects, she decided to create a solo one where she could put into practice all his influences and aspirations.
“Cantadeira is Joana Negrão alone on stage but very well accompanied by her own voice, building overlapping sound layers that serve as the basis for traditionally inspired melodies, as well as invoking soundscapes from our collective memory. Although also using the Portuguese Cancioneiro A Cantadeira intends to create a new repertoire, giving voice to current issues and looking for the tradition of today.” WOMEX PROFILE
Ak Dan Gwang Chil (ADG7) - Whatever & Aucha (Live on KEXP)
“They’re not your daughter’s K-Pop band! The nine-piece South Korean ensemble ADG7 (aka Ak Dan Gwang Chil) draws equal inspiration from newly reclaimed Korean folk styles of gut and minyo and the contemporary Eurocentric stylings of modern K-Pop for music for a mix that will surprise you with its raucous, danceable energy. The band’s charismatic and ultra-fashionably dressed trio of frontwomen are backed by masterfully played traditional Korean instrumentation and present a distinctively theatrical style of performance that's like nothing you've ever heard before, but that you'll never forget. You won't want to miss the crowd-pleasing sonic sensations that The New York Times calls “catchy, bouncy and brash.”
“ADG7, formed in 2015 during Korea's 70th anniversary of national liberation, is on a mission to revive the rich tapestry of Korean cultural heritage, symbolizing both liberation and the longing for unity. Their remarkable journey has been marked by significant accolades, including winning Best Group at the 2018 KBS Korean Traditional Music Awards and receiving the esteemed Sori Frontier Award at the 2017 Jeongju International Sori Festival.
“Their vibrant performances have graced renowned festivals and iconic venues worldwide, such as WOMEX, globalFEST, WOMAD, Roskilde, Glastonbury, Sziget, Montreal Jazz Festival, FEQ, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, and countless others. ADG7 continues to captivate audiences far and wide with their exceptional artistry and dedication to preserving Korean cultural traditions.”
Les Égarés "Esperanza" / Jazz in Marciac 2023
“Les Égarés is a play space, a place of musical life, a poetic asylum inhabited by two pairs who, for years, have excelled in the art of crossing sounds and transcending genres: Ballaké Sissoko (kora) Vincent Segal (cello) Vincent Peirani (accordion) Émile Parisien (saxophone)
“With these magicians, 2+2 no longer makes 4, but 1. Because it is indeed a unity of spirit and a fluidity of sound that these strong individuals invent together, scorning any competition of egos to put themselves at the service of the common musical good.
“Neither jazz nor traditional, neither chamber nor avant-garde, but a little of all of that at once. Les Egarés offer us a concert where the ear is the king of instruments, where virtuosity is expressed in the art of being an accomplice, where the simple and grandiose desire to listen to the other results in the birth of a splendid four-part song.”
