Featured Album this week …
Msaki & Tubatsi Mpho Moloi Synthetic Hearts
If not the best album of the year so far, certainly in the top 5 and I recommend you listen to it as soon as possible.
The collaboration between two leading South African musicians, Msaki and Tubatsi Mpho Moloi, is a tour de force.
Msaki [Facebook] [WikiPedia] has been a classic “overnight sensation” after working for more than 10 years in music (even starting her own record label in 2013). She was nominated in 5 sections of the South African Music Awards and won 2. She started out in music in 2008 after studying art at university. Then, in 2012, went to music school in North Carolina in the USA. She has released several albums of her own as well as collaborating with other musicians. As an artist Msaki unveiled six pieces of her artwork titled Platinumb Heart of Love In Protest and performed at Nirox Sculpture park to promote her double album in February.
Urban Village from Soweto, is a band I have played often through the last three years. Tubatsi Mpho Moloi [Facebook] [website] is currently the lead vocalist for the band contributing flute, guitar and mbira to the stage. The South African born singer- songwriter says he in “influenced by the sounds of blues, jazz, rock and African folk music. His newest work is inspired by artists Guy Buttery, Philip Tabane, Bob Dylan and Zim Nqawane.”
One of the many reviews says: “A warmth burns solidly throughout Synthetic Hearts, the collaborative debut from Msaki x Tubatsi. Formed of South African musicians Msaki, and Tubatsi Mpho Moloi, both bring influences from their distinct solo work – drawing from styles as disparate as folk, mbaqanga (a South African genre blending jazz with Zulu music), pop, and amapiano (a style of South African house music). They are joined by French cellist Clément Petit, whose distinctive plucked cello evokes a unique playfulness.”

Dur-Dur Band Int. feat Xabiib Sharaabi - Duurka
Once called the Muqdisho Funk, Disco, Soul Band then the Dur Dur band, they disbanded in the 1990 largely because of the disintegrating political and civil situation in their home country Somalia. They have reformed and fallen apart several times. Now, reformed again, they are based in London and recording in Berlin under the name Dur Dur Band international. Their album is The Berlin Session.
Mokoomba - Kum Kanda (Live on KEXP)
Occasionally I use a country’s national day to help me choose some music, especially if it is a country that I’ve not paid much attention to recently. Zimbabwe’s national day is soon (18 April) so a few pieces from there. One band I particularly like are Mokoomba who I saw play live six or seven years ago in Slovenia during their European tour. I’ve only just heard their new single - I’ll keep that for next week. But for now, a track from their last album.
PoiL Ueda - Dan no Ura - 壇ノ浦の戦い - Live 2021
You really had to be there … I saw Junko Ueda & Poil in Lisbon last year and it was a surprising, experience expanding, demanding and utterly enjoyable affair. Freeform jazz, meets punk, meets progrock, and that’s just PoiL!). All that combined with Junko Ueda’s Japanese traditional biwa epic story telling and shomyo Buddhist chant.
Junko Ueda was born in Tokyo, Japan. A singer and satsuma-biwa player, she and French band PoiL. The album is PoiL / Ueda a frenetic tribute to a once closed cultural past of the East and the futuristic prediction of different musical rules and abandonment.
Notes that came with the album say:
“PoiL Ueda is the result of a collaboration between Junko Ueda, a vocalist and satsuma-biwa player from Japan, and PoiL, a French rock/contemporary music band. The creation is based on the 13th-century Japanese epic tale "Heike-Monogatari."
”The composition is based on traditional epic singing accompanied by the satsuma-biwa and Buddhist Shomyo chant. Through the fusion of an ancient Japanese traditional music with a hyper modern European musical formation, this project offers the opportunity to discover a unique musical universe.
”An innovative performance where PoiL's unrestrained experimental rock blends with the mellow and sinuous voice, the compelling narrative, and the remarkable charisma of Junko Ueda.”

TRAD.ATTACK! - Püksata magama (Live at Estonian TV program Hommik Anuga)
From Estonia, the three piece TradAttack! have just released Bring It On. It might be the best think they’ve done. The album features an Estonian guitarist who has become something of and Americana star, a country music star in the States - Laur Joamets … Estonian Guitar Hero is not on this video, but features on the album.
