Featured Album - Moonlight Benjamin Wayo
Born and raised in Haiti, it wasn’t until just before her 17th birthday that Moonlight Benjamin began a very short musical career with a local singer Tinès Salvant. In Port-au-Prince she began to study voodoo philosophy, eventually restarting her work in music, again mainly as a backing singer.
In 2002 she had just turned 30. She left Haiti moving to Toulouse in the south of France to study music at Music’Halle.
In this and her two previous albums, she blends the voodoo philosophy with hard edged western rock, to even greater effect on Wayo her most recent album. It’s also worth finding and listening to the two previous albums Simido, and Siltane. Her earlier work is significantly different – lighter, more melodic and in an entirely different genre.
Moonlight Benjamin: Tiny Desk Meets globalFEST 2023
Moonlight Benjamin is one of the acts playing at the Sakifo music festival in June in Réunion Island. While not quite previewing the festival, I’m playing some of the musicians performing there. Here’s more detail about the festival, and if you have easier access to Réunion than I have, you might be interested in going. It’s unlikely I will get there!
Another performer will be South Africa’s Sho Madjozi . I’ll be playing this track from Limpopo Champions League

Rock from Bulgaria? This is fun.
