The featured album this week - Gaïsha’s Ana Aïcha.
Gaïsha is a collaboration between the Belgian-Moroccan singer Aïcha Haskal and members of Les Cerveaux Lents.
Singer Aïcha Haskal was a member of Va Fan Fahre from 2007 to 2013 and now leads Gaïsha who have recently released their first album. Their overall sound is the merging of oriental and psychedelic styles with rock. They switch between Arabic chants and some decent pop music adding a “Brussels twist” as a result of their base in Belgium.
There’s little else to say about the album. There’s little information available - so just listen.
I included a video of Gaïsha’s Ana Aïcha in an earlier newsletter. Here’s a live version.

For months now not an edition of Around the World without music from Brazil. But this is the first time for me to play Brazilian punk (post punk really but let’s not quibble).
They formed in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Initially, they were 3 women and one man from different states in Brazil who met in the city. Starting out as vocals, bass, and drums, the original guitarist was replaced by another woman in 2020.
This year they plan to release 6 singles rather than one album, and their first is Malícia
According to their biog
Blastfemme flirts with punk using disco-like dance melodies mixed with the vigorous sound of the 90s.
The band released their first album in 2019, after already being known in the underground scene in Rio, having participated in festivals such as Bananada (GO), Aldeia Rock Fest (RJ) and toured in China (!). Entitled "Blastfemme", the album featured punk and noise influences, combined with disco and pop beats. They also passed through the Circo Voador stage last year and will be there again this year.
Malice. Excellent title for a modern day punk band.
Here’s an idea of their live set (the overall sound is poor - but it must have been better in the venue).

There are two albums from Ethiopian bands worth drawing your attention to. The Entoto band’s first release from February and earlier this month Ukandanz’s Kemekem.
This week I’m playing Entoto Band.
Entoto Band brings a modern day version of Ethiopian funk from the ’60s. Roaring saxophones, soulful vocals and groovy rhythms melt together in an hi-energy performance, while audience finds itself on the dance floor of swinging Addis Ababa!
