Featured Album - Eliza Carthy - Queen of the Whirl
Eliza Carthy is one of the great contemporary English folk musicians. She is an artist who has pushed what we know as folk music well beyond its expected boundaries. She has released at least 12 albums under her own name, more as part of The Waterson Family and even more collaborating with dozens of other bands and musicians.
In December she released The Queen of the Whirl, I think her 13th album solo or with her own band – but I’ve lost count. I am pleased to say I’ll be playing 4 tracks as this week’s featured album.
Eliza is from a family of folk musicians. Her parents, two of the very best. Mother Norma Waterson who died last January had her own solo career, and as a member of the family band The Watersons. Her Father is Martin Carthy. In the 1960’s he taught a young American folk singer touring England a song about Scarborough.
That singer was Paul Simon who went on to bring the song to the world.
I understand that it’s only in the last few years Eliza heard to song. In a recent interview with the BBC she said that her father told her not to listen to his contemporaries, but to find her own influences.
Very good advice …
Although this is not one of the tracks I’ll be playing, it’s one of the best videos I’ve seen this year.

Balkan:Most
It wasn’t until after I had finished the running order this week and began to note where the musicians were from I realised that there is a lot (even more than usual) music from The Balkans: Alma Subašić, Altin Gün, Lakiko, Mostar Sevdah Reunion, Oratnitza, and Tárkány Trió.
I’ve had a deep affection for music from the Balkans. It encompasses many genres – “Balkan Music” is not a genre itself. There is project called Balkan:Most - “Most” means “Bridge” in many Balkan languages and “Now” in Hungarian. It’s an excellent project that promotes Balkan Music to the rest of the world.
They’ve produced an introductory playlist on Spotify. The opening track is this (video here and below). From Bulgaria, they are Ornatiza [video]. This from their 2015 album Folktron was Zhelkya
Oratnitza feat. Iliyana Naydenova - Zhelkya (live)
Once upon a time they were shooting a movie in Almeria in Spain with Joe Strummer and Courtney Love. It was feista time there, and during the nightly street celebrations one tune kept playing and playing and playing …
So they used it to write a song of their own. From The Pogues 1988 album – If I Should Fall from Grace with God, Fiesta.
The Pogues - Fiesta
Bongo Joe Records has just made available – principally on Bandcamp - a fundraising compilation. “Solidarity With February 2023 Earthquake Victims”, It is in support of the people devastated by the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.
The compilation is set as “pay as you want”, so people are encouraged to give what they want and what they can. The entirety of the proceeds will go to local Non-Governmental Organisations working on the field.
Two bands you are probably familiar with Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek, and Altın Gün are involved along with two other bands from Istanbul: Oldu O Zaman, Lalar – It’s an excellent album – a great intor to modern Turkisk music. I’ll be playing Altin Gün’s Tatlı Diller Güler Yüze.
Altın Gün - Tatlı Dile Güler Yüze (Live on KEXP)
Join me when you can.
Have a great weekend.
