Featured Album - Mari Kalkun's Stories of Stonia
Mari Kalkun - LEND PÕHJATAEVA ALL / Flight Beneath the Northern Sky
Mari Kalkun’s music is … rooted in ancient Estonian and Võru traditions, but beautifully fresh and contemporary, Stories of Stonia reaches back to very old layers of tradition to imagine what Mari’s ancestors would have thought and sung about the world in an era of skyscraper, steel, and metal. Throughout the album’s nine songs, Mari explores humanity’s controversial relationship with nature with powerfully emotive musical backdrops. One of Northern Europe’s most important folk singers Mari has created a mysterious and magical album. [Real World Records]
I wrote about meeting Mari at Tallinn Music Week in an earlier edition of the Around the World Preview
Bosco Rakoto - Miangavy Aho
Bosco Rakoto contacted me on Facebook to show me this video. Here’s his Facebook profile. He is a traditional Malagasy musician living in Antananarivo, Madagascar. From a musical family, he has been active in music since 1998 playing traditional beko music - a genre found usually in the south of Madagascar. His album is Hazavana.
You will also find him on the Small Island Big Song website. If you want to find out more, contact him on Facebook.
Mokoomba - Ndipe (Live on KEXP)
One of the most entertaining bands I have ever watched is Mokoomba. After a long wait Tusona: Tracings in the Sand album has been released. As it is very likely that will be the featured album next week, I’ll wait until then to tell you more.
