Brighde Chaimbeul - Carry Them with Us
Brìghde Chaimbeul featuring Colin Stetson - Tha Fonn Gun Bhi Trom | I Am Disposed of Mirth
It was October 2021 in Porto, Portugal. In a large room with perhaps 800 people, around lunchtime so none of the atmosphere of the night - a difficult daytime showcase of a young Scottish piper for whom atmosphere plays an important part of performance. Alone on a dark stage with a few spotlights, Brìghde Chaimbeul gripped my and the rest of the audience’s attention as she played the Scottish short pipes. She and the performance were outstanding. The BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award Winner and Young Folk Award Winner has released her third album Carry Them With Us and is joined by saxophonist Colin Stetson. I’ll be playing four tracks on the show.
Also on the show
There’s a bit of Mongolian theme in part 1. We start under the big skies of the republic of Tuva on the Russian border with Mongolia and the traditional throat singing of the region, but Khöömei Beat add that little bit of rock and roll.
Khoomei Beat - Wandering the Steppe
The Haya Band are also in range of the Mongolian border – but they are from the Chinese side. Here’s an excerpt of the live performance.
The Show Goes On...line: HAYA Band (2017)
The to end part 1 it’s an actual Mongol band - The Hu
The Hu - Shireg Shireg
A Celtic mixtape
It’s a long time since I put together a mixtape for the show. But I was talking to a friend who asked if I know the music if Denez Prigent from Brittany. I do, but I don’t think I’ve ever played anything by him. So that conversation mixed with the intention to feature the Brìghde Chaimbeul album led me to think about a Celtic mixtape. But this will be “Celtic Extended” with music from Northumberland, Cornwall, Brittany, Normandy, Galicia, Ireland, Wales and the featured album from Scotland – the Isle of Sky – so about half an hour of music uninterrupted – or barely interrupted in this Celtic mixtape. About half of Part 2 will be music from Celtic countries and regions.
I’ll put all the tunes on my blog davysims.com in a few days.
