Humazapas - Sara Tipi - Music Video
The full story of the Humazapas album Sara Mama can be found on their Bandcamp page and there is no reason for me to duplicate that here. In brief …
Humazapas was formed in 2010, when twelve teenagers from the Kichwa communities of Turuku, San Pedro, Jatun Topo and Anrabí in the Ecuadorian Andes decided to salvage the sounds and ritual dances of the Kichwa communes at the foot of the Tayta Imbabura and Mama Cutakachi volcanoes. …
After over a decade of research and interest in returning to ancestral knowledge, the group made up of eight musicians and four dancers, weaving in their discourse the cosmovision of community life with people, nature and the world of the deities, finally release their debut record 'Sara Mama', which translates as “Mother Corn” in English. Corn is one of the sacred grains that conceals knowledge in its crop and the magic of the rituals of raising, nurturing and celebrating life, from preparing the earth to harvesting the dry grains …
The record has twelve songs about the relationship between humanity, nature and the world of deities …
It takes you off the usual sources for “world music” and “folk music” and presents a bright sounding enlightening mix of the long held traditions of the region and a delicate but modern approach to reviving those sounds.
Onipa - No Commando ft. David Walters (Official Video)
Around the World starts this week with the London band Onipa. Their co-founder Kewku Sackey’s heritage lies in Accra in Ghana, where the video for that single was shot. Onipa with David Walters, the French singer-songwriter, producer. He’s from Paris, his grandparents were from Saint-Kitts and Martinique. A hint of the sort of music you’ll hear this week.
Dealán Dé - Clare Sands & Brian Finnegan (Official Video)
Clare Sands and Brian Finnegan’s current single is Dealán Dé. Clare’s roots are in both Wexford and Northern Ireland. Her uncles ( … or maybe great uncles?) Tommy and Colm Sands from the legendary Sands family are old friends of mine . And Brian Finnegan began playing the whistle at age 8 and flute at age 10. He is a former member of the Armagh Pipers Club.
Ali Doğan Gönültaş / Geldim Şu Alemi Islah Edeyim [ Live in Cappadocia ]
My friend Araceli Tzigane from Mapamundi Música has spent much of this and last year working with Ali Doğan Gönültaş. “Last year in May, when I received Ali Doğan Gönültaş's digital album, Kiğı, his voice and his music captured me.”She tells me. “I felt compelled to talk to him to explore the possibility of a collaboration.
”It was clear to me that there would be some challenges... The increasing cost of transport, the visas... Even his English was almost inexistent when I travelled to Vienna for his concert in September! But the music and the talent were more powerful than all that.
”A little over a year has passed. Ali and his band have performed in 2023 in Germany, Switzerland, Sweden and Spain. The concerts have been adapted to indoor and outdoor formats, captivating audiences in both contexts.
“(Recently) they played in Dersim, the cultural capital of their homeland. (They) travelled to France for a tour of 10 concerts, until September 1st (full schedule, here). And, after France, Ali will perform at the Fira Mediterrània in Manresa, at the Fundação Gulbenkian in Lisbon and has a tour in Germany between 7 and 27 November (thanks to alba Kultur), which includes the iconic Elbphilarmonie auditorium in Hamburg.
”In December, Ali will record his second album. We already have some plans for 2024 and we are working on the bookings.
You can contact Araceli Tzigane at Mapamundi Música if you would like more information.
