Raúl Rodríguez: "De vuelta a casa"
Raúl Rodríguez is a multi-award winning musician who combines his love of music with his passion for anthropology. He graduated Geography, History, and Cultural Anthropology to better understand the nature the music he listened to and played going on to augment his study with travels and contacts in Latin America and Africa.
But his musical career began in rock as an electric guitarist in “Los Innombrables”, between 1989 and 1992 in Huelva in the south of Spain near Seville. He trained as a flamenco guitarist studying the Toque de Morón, later forming the group Caraoscura as a duet with José Loreto "Charamusco", son of the great Jerez-born guitarist Parrilla de Jerez.
Over his career he has played with musicians as diverse as Jackson Browne, Omara Portuondo, Toumani Diabaté, Lila Downs, Susana Baca, John Cale, and Paul Simonon of The Clash. His recording credits are extensive, but La Razón Eléctrica is only his third solo album following Razón de son (2014), and La raíz eléctrica (2017)

Dropkick Murphys "Bring It Home" ft. Jaime Wyatt (Music Video)
Okemah Rising is the twelfth studio album by everybody’s favourite Bostonians Dropkick Murphys. It was recorded last year during the sessions for This Machine Still Kills Fascists and like the songs from that album, the songs here are composed of unused lyrics from Woody Guthrie. The album’s executive producer was Guthrie's daughter Nora and also features appearances by Violent Femmes, Jaime Wyatt, Jesse Ahern and Woody's grandson Cole Quest.
And it includes a version of their biggest hit, "I'm Shipping Up to Boston", which was originally written by Woodie Guthrie. Something I didn’t realise … but really should have known. I’ll not be playing "Bring It Home"
DAGADANA - Kangding Qingge (live in Shanghai)
Dagandana are a Polish and Ukrainian band – and if you like vinyl above all other sound formats you might be interested in this.
POLVINYL, a vinyl record pressing company and label are about to release an audiophile version of Dagadana's album "Meridian 68". Which was released originally in 2016. The vinyl version marks Dagadana’s 15th anniversary,
I’ll be playing a track from the album - sadly not from vinyl, but if you love that format, then contact Polvinyl from more details. Above is a live version of the track I’ll be playing.
Brazil Calling [Facebook] [Wordpress] [Substack] is a newsletter I subscribe to which provides me with information about new releases from Brazil. Run by David McLaughlan - an Irishman living in São Paulo, Brazil. It’s really worth subscribing to for release information.
Carlos Rivera, Omara Portuondo - Lágrimas Negras (Video Oficial)
She’s 92 years old – 93 in October. Omara Portuondo from Cuba became widely known for her work with the Buena Vista Social Club. Her career began in 1957 – Buena Vista Social Club was 40 years later. Her new album Vida, has other internationally known singers mainly from Cuba and South America. People like Gaby Moreno from Guatema, Susana Baca from Peru, Keb Mo Nashville and Mexican musician Nathalia Lafoucade. I’ll be playing Me Toca with Carlos Rivera who is also from Mexico.
