This week’s Featured Album
40 Quaranta - Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino
One of my occasional forays into the past for this week’s featured album. Any reason? No, except that any excuse at all to play Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino - even no excuse - will do. Even though they have been known internationally in the last five or six years, they began as a family group in 1975. Quaranta marked their 40th anniversary and the beginning of a new generation of family members leading the music. They have been building a global reputation since (and possibly before). Quaranta brought them to new audiences as they blended traditional music with modern techniques. Compare the opening track on the 1977 Canti di Terra d'Otranto e della Grecia Salentina [iTunes] [Spotify] [Deezer] with the opening of the 2021, and most recent, Meridiana [iTunes] [Spotify] [Deezer]. To more fully understand Quaranta and Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino there’s a short documentary above and one of the songs I’ll be playing this week below.

Also on the show
Here are a few more videos from the musicians I’ll be playing - if not the actual songs.
LE PARC - Studio Shap Shap
“Five musicians of different origins (Niger, Chad, Reunion Island) break the codes with their unique electro-roots vibe. A live that makes you move irresistibly: it's Studio Shap Shap.
“Among them, three traditional musicians with rare instruments: the powerful Mai Douma, on Douma percussion with his unique foot technique; Ousseini, the tall soloist and his small string instruments, his Komsa and Molo; Popo, the fairy, with his Kindé harps. They are escorted by the groove of Harobasse, the bass player, and Sakina, conductor with her piano and electro samples that capture the daily life of Niger.
“At the end of 2019, Studio Shap Shap lost its oldest member, Boubé Diallo. Touched by this immense loss, the five friends throw themselves wholeheartedly into the creation.
“At the beginning of 2022, after a long wait, pandemic obliges, the group returns in Europe to present its new live and an EP announcing the release of their second album « Le Monde Moderne » (release on December 9, 2022). Concept album for a new musical journey more electro which always sublimates the traditional instruments. For those who are looking for a sound like no other!” [Studio Shap Shap Bio]
Miguel Campello - De fiesta con la Lola Flores
De fiesta con la Lola Flores is not the most representative song from Miguel Campello’s Noche y Día, it’s not even the best song. But it is the only video I can find. What will I be playing? Tune in to find out.
And a bit of classic English folk music to end the newsletter and the show.
The Imagined Village - John Barleycorn (Live at Real World Studios)
