Featured Album - Tokyo MinYo Club - MinYo Songbook, Vol. 1
A folk music as called "MinYo" is a song of the people in Japan.
In both Japan and Korea the word MinYo translates as Folk Song. In Japan 民謡 and in Korea 民謠.
“The most renowned genre of Korean folk music, minyo reflects the heart of the common people through their words of heartbreak, struggle and despair.” [1]
“Japanese folk songs, or minyo, have long been handed down by common people all over Japan through rituals such as prayers and festivals, and at places of work related to agriculture, forestry and fishing.” [2]
Tokyo MinYo Clun is led by Yutaka Oyama is a third generation Tsugaru shamisen player of the Oyama School, and started studying the shamisen at a very early age from his grandfather, the head master of Oyama shamisen school. He won at the National Folkloric Music Association’ s Tsugaru Shamisen Contest two years in a row in 2001 and 2002. [3]
The overall idea is to mis the traditional folk music with street culture or as Tokyo MinYo Club put it “Folk Music x Street Culture = Tokyo MinYo Club”.

Also on the show this week:
Gaïsha - Gand la nuit
Mysterious French ballad about nocturnal escapades in Ghent. Second single of the upcoming album of Gaïsha - Ana Aïcha on Zephyrus records. Gaïsha is the funky collaboration between the Belgian-Moroccan singer Aïcha Haskal and (ex) members of Absynthe Minded, Sylvie Kreusch, De Beren Gieren and Va Fan Fahre. Together they bring you oriental & psychedelic grooves with a Brussels twist. The band switches seamlessly between Arabic chants, parlando and even rap, which results in a brilliant melting pot of styles.
Lisa O'Neill - Silver Seed
“Raw and unvarnished folk for austere times. Uncomprimising, stunning, soul-shaking stuff” - The Guardian
Until next week - see you.
