Roupa de tirar - Sandália de Prata feat. Tássia Reis
The São Paulo-based band Sandália de Prata, led by singer and songwriter Uli Costa, has just released their fifth album - Uli Costa e Sandália de Prata - following their previous works: Maloqueiro e Elegante (2017), Desafio ao Galo (2011), Samba Pesado (2009), and their self-titled debut in 2007. Produced by the duo Brazuk — Júlio Fejuca and Ricardo Gama, both Latin Grammy winners — the new album blends samba, rap, afrobeat, jazz, MPB, and soul.
Over the past 22 years, Sandália de Prata has become a staple of São Paulo’s black dance music scene. In 2018, they represented Brazilian music at the FIFA World Cup in Russia alongside renowned artists like Emicida and Hermeto Pascoal. Throughout their career, they’ve shared the stage with icons like Elza Soares, Jair Rodrigues, and Fernanda Abreu.
Mika Kobayashi feat. Tempus - Pouto
The Czech band Tempus appeared on Japanese singer Mika Kobayshi’s album Mika Type San towards the end of last year.
Mika Kobayashi is known worldwide for her iconic vocals in anime soundtracks and her original music. The fantasy/world music band Tempus, worked with her to create “Pouto” — a song about two warriors bound by prophecy, destined to face each other in a battle of life and death. The video was released earlier in March.
I met Linda Ravena (lead vocals, shawms, cornamuses, recorders) and David Zima (hurdy gurdy, shawms, bagpipes, vocals) at Brno Music Marathon (Maraton hudby Brno) last August and Linda dropped me a note to tell me about the video.
“Despite not speaking Czech, Mika performed the entire song in Czech. The whole collaboration took place remotely, making this project even more special.
“We started working on Pouto and the video last spring. We recorded and filmed various pronunciation tutorials for Mika Kobayashi, but in the end, she did an amazing job.”
Duo Ruut - Udu
Duo Ruut has a new single, Udu (meaning Fog). I have seen the couple play live twice, once at Tallinn Music Week, and once at WOMEX. Two young women in the spotlight facing each other, both playing the same instrument singing harmonically.
From their Website: Duo Ruut's sound is based on the common ground that two young Estonian musicians and songwriters, Ann-Lisett Rebane and Katariina Kivi have explored since coming together in 2017.
Their sound ties together a single Estonian zither and two distinct voices. Inspired by the traditions of their Estonian heritage, they draw influence from both the beliefs of different cultures and their own contemporary and emotive songwriting.
As they are composing on one instrument Duo Ruut’s music is minimalist at its core but packed with new and imaginative ideas
MonsieurDoumani - Alavrostishiótis
Sometimes I play a song on an old playlist. Sometimes I find an old favourite video. You might see adverts on YouTube for Pink Floyd in Pompeii. Those ads reminded me of this. I saw the Pink Floyd film when it was released, I saw Pink Floyd perform The Wall in London. I’d much rather watch this band these days. One of Antonis Antoniou’s creations.
