This week’s Featured Album - Hrdza - Čo mi Je, To mi Je
Hrdza - Horela ľipka / The Linden Tree Was Burning
2024 is the year that marks Hrdza’s 25th anniversary. They formed in 1999 in Prešov, a town in the east of Slovakia less than an hour’s drive away from both Hungary and Poland and within a couple of hours of Ukraine. For many years this is the area where they were best known and racked up a score of awards in Slovakia and the neighbouring Czech Republic. It is only in recent years their profile has extended beyond the region particularly because of their 2018 album Neskrotený.
The founding members are Slavomír Gibarti and fellow singer Jaroslava Sisáková. Slavomir studied in Dublin translated all the lyrics for the album’s booklet.
As I mentioned last week, about five years ago they released a single called Stefan, they were fairly obscure outside Slovakia and region. Last time I looked at the video for the single on YouTube about a year after its release, Stefan had gained an impressive 3 million views. Today – 38 million views.
Buzz' Ayaz - Zali (Official Video)
The first single by Buzz’ Ayaz was released on Wednesday.
The name Antonis Antoniou is often mentioned in Around the World. In addition to his solo albums (Kkismettin, Throisma and Thorisma Remixed which have all been featured albums on the show) he also formed Monsieur Doumani and Trio Tekke.
He tells me that his new band Buzz’ Ayaz is “the start of a new adventure in Eastern Mediterranean psychedelia.” I have seen a few preliminary videos but this is the first record release, a precurser to the album which will be available later this year. How does Buzz’ Ayaz differ from the other music Antonis has made? “The sound is a wild mixture of fuzzy synth textures, dubby electronics, 70s psych organ, growling bass clarinet, tribal beats and microtonal Anatolian melodies.”
From Cyprus’s divided capital Nicosia, members of the band come from both sides of the Greek/Turkish divide. Their joining together is a deliberate attempt to create a music that gives voice to the whole city. A music that echoes above its concrete walls.
Muireann Bradley - Candyman (Jools' Annual Hootenanny)
Until the last hours of 2023, Muireann Bradley was barely known outside her home in County Donegal and by a group of supporters who has seen her YouTube videos. She had just turned 17 when she made her debut appearance on Jools Holland’s BBC TV New Year’s Eve show Hootenanny.
Covid-19 had forced her to put aside her sporting activities and she turned to her guitar. Posting YouTube videos of her blues picking guitar songs, she was offered a deal with US folk label Tompkins Square. I Kept These Old Blues was released in December, and I’ll be playing her rendition of the old Elizabeth Cotton Freight Train which itself was recorded over 100 years ago and later made famous by Nancy Whiskey in 1956.
