Three German online radio stations join the party
Three online radio stations based in Germany from the N.A.R. group now carry Around the World on Fridays 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m (CET).
This is Around the World (preview) and if you’ve not heard the show before, the idea is very simple. Every week I sit in my studio at home and listen to hundreds of pieces of music. It’s mostly new music, many different types of music – rock and traditional and roots and folk experimental electronic, every type of music that I can find and it comes from all over the world.
I filter those down to about 25 or so, add a few older tunes you might already know and for two hours every week I share them with you.
Every week there is a featured album – this week it includes musicians from several countries that have the Mediterranean region in common.
This week’s Featured Album - Hysterrae by Hysterrae
Hysterrae - “Aziz Djun”
If you’ve followed this show for any length of time, you might already know that my interest in world music was sparked by a fascination with the Mediterranean – how for thousands and thousands of years, the cultures of North Africa, Southern Europe and the Middle East have mixed and merged and influenced and affected one another. How the music of China and the far east travelled along the Silk Roads to Rome and Cairo and Athens and Barcellona – how the music of Africa emerged on the European stage multiple generations before recorded music was exported around the world.
And my fascination continues as modern electronica and dance rhythms animate the music around the Med – and many other places too.
The featured album this week is linked very closely to that theme – It’s called Hysterrae [Facebook] – three women from southern Italy and one from Iran. The debut album is eponymous to highlight the original concept of the band. “Hyster” means the mother’s womb in classical Greek and in this case the womb of the Earth (“terrae” in Latin).
Percussive rhythms and polyphonic voices meet dub and EDM, evoking ritual and ancient times.
The long-established band from Salento Officina Zoe - a particular favourite of mine - are embedded in the project. Two of the singers Cinzia Marzo and Silvia Gallone are from the group as is the producer and electronic musician Emanuel Flandoli. The two other singers are Italian Irene Lungo and Shadi Fathi from Iran.
Tempus - Nesplněná touha
Tempus is a music group from Brno playing world music with rock elements, inspired by medieval melodies. They formed in 2007 and is currently plays in a seven-member line-up, consisting of musicians who also have experience in projects of other genres. The instrumentation is unconventional and varied, combining modern musical instruments with replicas of medieval instruments. The melodic lines of niners, flutes, violins and shalmai intertwine with free-sounding electric guitar motifs coloured by bass guitar and drums. The songs have a very dynamic structure, based on the contrast of Linda Ravenna's soft vocals and sophisticated instrumental parts.
