This week
Following the preview of WOMAD New Zealand last week, this week, I’m previewing WOMADelaide to be held on 8th to 11th March 2024.
Music from: Angola, Australia, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada, Estonia, France, Ghana, Hungary, Ireland, Mali, Nigeria, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Senegal, Sweden, Tazikistan, and USA.
Music by: Anna Mieke, Baaba Maal, BANTU, Bombino, DANTCHEV:DOMAIN, Dubioza Kolektiv, Fränder, Frank Yamma, George Telek & Not Drowning Waving, Idrissa Soumaoro, Lakvar, Las Lloronas, Mari Kalkun, Mizrob, OKAN, Onipa & Dele Sosimi, Pongo, Réalta, Rüüt, Sharon Shannon, Stromae, The Budos Band, and Willie Colón & Ruben Blades
The featured album is Lakvar’s new album, Fiction and Folklore.
Formed by Hungarian-Bulgarian singer Hajnalka Péter and Georgian guitarist Zura Dzagnidze, Lakvar have drawn their members from all over eastern Europe. Bassist Péter Papesch is from Hungary, Tayfun Ates is the Bulgarian-Turkish percussionist with German Jazz violin player Florian Vogel, Italian drummer Santino Scavelli and Latvian accordion player Aleksejs Maslakovs. They are based in Germany.
LAKVAR Gergelem live Theaterhaus
Their music could easily be described as “folk-rock”, but there are more complex ideas that draw on jazz, traditional music from the Caucasus and other parts of eastern Europe. Even prog-rock (perhaps).
They say of themselves “Not limited by convention, LAKVAR take musical risks to break through the borders and boundaries of musical tradition and open up new path between them.” [*]
Lakvar released their second album in mid-October on CPL-Music. Fiction and Folklore follows Sabotage and Tradition released in 2020 and is the featured album this week.
WOMADelaide
This week on Around the World I’m playing some music from musicians and bands who have been announced for WOMADelaide to be held in March next year, a week before WOMAD New Zealand.
Both events share some performers including the Bosnian band Dubioza Kolektiv – who I saw a few months ago in Hungary. They do a fantastic live performance and if you are ever given the chance to see them live, grab the chance by the lapels and don’t let go. In the meantime …
Dubioza Kolektiv LIVE @ Sziget 2017 [Full Concert]
Dubioza Kolektiv will be in Adelaide, Australia and then New Plymouth, New Zealand.
Pitjantjatjara elder Frank Yamma and Papua New Guinea music legend George Telek will both be performing in WOMADelaide as part of Wantok Sing Sing. Sing Sing is a tok pidgin word from Papua New Guinea meaning a large musical gathering, a celebration in song and dance, a music party. Frank Yamma and George Telek will form a “supergroup” of sixteen of the finest musicians from Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Australia.
Frank Yamma - Ngura Watjilpa
Frank Yamma a Pitjantjatjara man from Central Australia. He sings in both Pitjantjatjara and English. He’s a multi award winning musician.
Not Drowning Waving featuring Telek - Abebe
“George Telek Mamua MBE, commonly known simply as Telek, is a musician and singer from Papua New Guinea. He has won one ARIA Award for this 1997 self-titled album. Telek sings in his native language, Kuanua, and in Tok Pisin. Many of his songs are sung in three-part harmonies that are characteristic of the Tolai.” [Wikipedia}

Las Lloronas - Pequeña
Keep and eye - and an ear - out for Las Lloronas second album Out Of The Blue. It is one of several albums by women a cappella groups (more in subsequent shows) and follows their 2020 album Soaked. The Brussles based trio have roots in Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, USA and Germany.
Sura Solomon (BE/USA), Amber in ‘t Veld (ES/NL) and Marieke Werner (DE) started out as street-musicians, united around their passion for sociology, activism and art. Their debut album «Soaked», driven by their intimate, multilingual feminist poetry, touched thousands of listeners. Now they’re back with «Out of the Blue» (release Oct 2023), a second album that’s stronger, more daring and extremely moving.
Anna Mieke - Salt (Official Audio)
There will be three pieces from Ireland this week. Réalta have released Thing of the Earth and celebrated by launching it at a club about 10km from where I live. Annoyingly I only discovered about the gig two days later. There will be something from Sharon Shannon (not Galway Girl). Sharon will be playing in WOMADelaide. Wicklow born Anna Mieke is back in the USA. Her tour began on 1 November. Theatre is the follow up to Idle Mind. In 2019, it won her a nomination in the 'Best Emerging Act’ category at the RTÉ Folk Awards. Early 2022 saw her headline tours across Spain, UK, Ireland and further afield, with a week-long residency in New York (May 2022), collaborating with NYC-based musicians and composers.
In Other News
If you are likely to be in Tallinn on 2 December there is a gig you must not miss - sadly my travel budget is exhausted for this year, so I will. Mari Kalkun has announced on Facebook (Translation below):
Finally - the album "STONIA STORY" PRESENTATION CONCERT in Tallinn! Mark your calendar 2.12.2023 and see you at MUBA!
We have joined forces with Duo Ruut so that two concerts with one go. Secure your place here: https://shorturl.at/bsBSW
I’ve seen Duo Ruut twice and would love to see them again. I’ve only seen Mari play once at a special event in Tallinn. Her album Stories of Stonia will be one of my top 5 for 2023.
Mari Kalkun - Tõistmuudu (Otherwise)
I’ll be playing two songs from Estonia - one by Mari and one by Rüüt (not Duo Ruut) from their new album Toonetuuled Kiriküüt.
