This week’s Featured Album - Songs of My Land by Chiyomi Yamada & baobab
Yasugi-bushi : Chiyomi Yamada & Baobab live in Oita, Japan
To get to the point immediately - this is one of the best albums I have heard this year. Every month I receive a couple of packages of albums from World Music Charts, Europe. Every month record companies, and bands offer their music for consideration. In every envelope there is fantastic music, sometimes not the music I play in the show, other times there are magnificent surprises. This was one of those instances. Listen for yourself.
Chiyomi Yamada from Kumamoto, Japan is a singer of European Ancient Music and Japanese Traditional Folklore. Her performances weave influences from ancient Japanese folklore, modern European folk-pop, sometimes even with a distinctly Celtic touch, making her Japanese music highly accessible to listeners from western cultures.
“Originally a classically trained soprano, the exceptional artist has been experimenting with traditional Japanese sounds and the combination of Far Eastern and Western sound aesthetics for many years. On this album, she returns to her roots both musically and spiritually: "Songs of my land" is a tribute to the ancient Japanese folk song, to the mysterious Shinto spirituality and to the people who have been celebrating life and love on this land with their songs for thousands of years.”
Baobab* are a contemporary Japanese folk music band who use instruments from Medieval to modern times and like Chiyomi Yamada, embrace styles from traditional to pop. “The music of baobab embodies the air and seasons of everyday life of the countryside from which it evolves.”
This is the first collaboration between Chiyomi Yamada and baobab.
*Not to be confused with the Senegalese band Orchestra Baobab.
Hysterrae - Ruvida
The Hysterrae album has already been featured on the show.
Four women from different ethnical and musical cultures. Four acclaimed world music artists, plus one electronic music producer. From Iran to Campania, from Valle d'Itria to Salento, and then beyond. Through a process of abstraction from the original elements of each tradition, Hysterrae creates a hypnotic journey in which voices, percussion, melodies and circularity create a feminine trance. The sound runs beyond the concept of borders of ethnic groups, bringing a strong message; there is a new life, a new awareness of being all part of one only great host: Mother Earth.
