La Bottine Souriante - Le Bal chez Jos Brûlé
“Founded by folklorists Mario Forest, Yves Lambert, André Marchand, Gilles Cantin and Pierre Laporte in 1976, La Bottine souriante presents a repertoire of traditional folk music collected from the regions of Québec. In the late 1980s, the group appeared in Europe and in several Canadian cities, winning the JUNO for best traditional album (1988). La Bottine tried their luck with a brass section, and borrowed world rhythms that proved audience favourites, as evidenced by their 4 Félix awards in the 1990s. Now, for most of the year, La Bottine souriante disseminates Québécois folklore on five continents. They received the BBC Folk Award in London in 1999.”
The Canadian Encyclopedia
“La Bottine’s unique musical mixture is the result of the remarkable chemistry shared between the eleven artists that form the group on stage: Mathieu Gagné (upright and electric bass); Olivier Salazar (piano and keyboards); Éric Beaudry (vocals, foot tapping, mandolin, Irish bouzouki, and guitar); Louis-Simon Lemieux (vocals, accordion, harmonica, and foot tapping); David Boulanger (violin, vocals, and foot tapping); Jean-François Gagnon-Branchaud (vocals, violin, and foot tapping); a horn section featuring Jean Fréchette (horn arrangements, saxophone, flageolet, and percussion), The Sheriff Robert “Bob” Ellis (bass trombone and egg shakers), André Verreault (trombone), and Jocelyn Lapointe (trumpet); and Sandy Silva (percussive dance).”

While there is a featured album every week, if I had a “Single of the Week” it would be this … From Somalia, Sarah Halgan.
Sahra Halgan - SHARAF (Official Music Vidéo)
Sahra Halgan (Sahra Ahmed Mohamoud ) is a Somali singer and cultural activist. She was born in 1972 in Hargeisa, Somalia. At 13 years old, she began to sing. Performing on the stage and singing in public is frowned upon by her community, but she has persisted. After the Somali civil war Halgan then left to take refuge in Europe and recuperate and settled in Lyon.
She was granted political refugee status. She worked odd jobs in the city, getting involved in neighborhood life and returning to music.[10] In 2009, she released her first album, Somaliland, She worked on a second project, a trio with percussionist Aymeric Krol and guitarist Maël Salètes, who she had met in Lyon. Her second album, Faransiskiyo Somaliland, was released in 2015. The music combined Tuareg rock and East African rhythms.
In 2015, she returned to live in Somalia after going back and forth between her native region and France. She founded a cultural centre devoted to music and poetry in Hargeisa, her hometown and second capital of Somalia. She released a third album, Waa Dardaaran, in 2019.
"SHARAF" is the first single from the new album "HIDDO DHAWR "(Keep the Culture Alive) to be released 29 March 2024 on DANAYA.
