Dogo du Togo & The Alagaa Beat Band - Avoudé (Official Video)
“Maintaining originality, a passion for one’s culture and an unconditional love of one’s terroir is rare in this 21st century.” This is the announcement on the homepage of the Dogo du Togo website.
Togo is one of the smallest countries in Africa (by size 41 out of 54) but it has its own culture, history, and tradition which the album Avoudé blends with Afro-pop and rock.
“The songs are based on Togolese traditional rhythms with ritual melodies (vaudou melodies) and festive melodies (bobobo, Simpa) and are about immigration, social justice and personal experiences,” [*]
In the Togolese capital Lomé, his home city, Dogo played in different bands before moving to the United States where he founded the DC based Afropop, Elikeh. Known for their high-energy live performances and original material, Elikeh released three albums and an EP.
Spending more time in his native country nowadays, Dogo released 3 singles as part of his first full album to be released in 2020. His debut album was released in 2022 and was received well in the US, Europe and Africa.
Avoudé was recorded at Otodi and Colibri Studios in Lomé, Togo and was released in November 2024. “Led by Dogo, who dubs their style 'Alagaa Trance,' the band's music weaves hypnotic layers and vibrant beats that are both captivating and energising. Their much-anticipated album, Avoude, captures this powerful fusion and is set for release in November on the We Are Busy Bodies label and promises to transport you into a new world with its mix of cultural depth and rhythmic intensity.” [*]
The review in Pop Matters says “Avoudé opens up space for Dogo and Alagaa Beat to play with a vast range of diverse Togolese rhythms and styles in making the alagaa beat. While the threads are worth unpacking and understanding, Avoudé demonstrates how brilliantly they can come together when the group has as tight a chemistry as the Alagaa Beat Band. This is the band that skilled innovator Dogo deserves to lead, and the reverse holds true as well; on Avoudé, every member of the Alagaa Beat Band has the chance to shine individually and together, and that’s undoubtedly thanks to Dogo’s vision.”
I’m always happy to hear your suggestions for music I should be listening to or playing on the show. Thanks to Russ Patterson who sent me his top albums of 2024.

One was Marina Satti - P.o.p. It is listed as a E.P. but is as long as many shorter albums. I saw Marina Saati play at Balkan Most in September 2023. She pun on a very enjoyable show.
The video supporting the album is worth seeing.
