This week’s Featured Album - Fado Camões by Lina_
The featured album on Around the World this week is Fado Camões by the Portuguese singer Lina.
It’s not often I will say this about an album, but there is not one less than superb song nor less than perfect performance on Fado Camões. I didn’t even make any decisions on what to play – I just chose tracks 1, 2, 3, and 4 and I expect all the rest will follow in many future shows.
Fado musicians are usually pretty traditional in their approach to their music and their live presentation. Lina is different. Her previous rather experimental album was produced by Raül Refree, a Spanish music producer, musician, and composer. Together they explored the songs of Amália Rodrigues. This album draws on the classic poetry of Portugal’s most celebrated historical poet, Luís Vaz de Camões who was born in Lisbon 1524. It was produced Justin Adams.
LINA_ O que temo e o que desejo - feat. Rodrigo Cuevas
"Raul and Justin have this curiosity about discovering links between the traditional and the contemporary, but this time the process was different," says Lina. "In this case, I made the demos at home and idealised the moods of each song, then came up with the arrangements and production processes. It was hard work. That's why it's a disc signed only by me. Compared to the previous one, this one focuses more on language, writing, poetry and the structure of Camões' poems that can be combined with fado. The other was more about the music, the sound, the textures."
On ‘Fado Camoes’ Lina is working alongside musician, composer and producer, Justin Adams. He has worked with Robert Plant, Rachid Taha, Tinariwen, Jah Wobble, Souad Massi. And he is just about to set off on a US tour with Mauro Durante.
Adams grew up in Egypt where he absorbed traditional music of the Maghreb and some of those influences have been carried over into his work with Lina.
Among the other musicians on the album are singer Rodrigo Cuevas from Asturias, northern Spain, Pedro Viana plays Portuguese guitar, Englishman John Bagott, who has worked with Massive Attack, Portishead and Robert Plant, is on piano and keys. Ianina Khmelik is on violin for two songs.
And I think we have one of the best albums of the year and we’re not even out of January yet.
Lenhart Tapes - Džamahirija (feat. Zoja Borovčanin)
I don’t use the word “unique” often, and too often it is used wrongly. But Lenhart Tapes (Vladimir Lenhart from Serbia) is a unique DJ. One man with 4 Walkman cassette players (do you remember Walkman players?) which he mixes live using recordings of old music including traditional Balkan music, field recordings of folk musicians, spoken word, old propaganda speeches.
After the release of his first album in 2010 he began experimenting in his live performances with guest vocalists and sometimes a five-or-more piece Lenhart Tapes Orchestra.
Zoja Borovčanin is the vocalist on the song Džamahirija. She also plays with the Belgrade band and Lira Vega.

meiko kaji — "銀蝶渡り鳥 (ginchou wataridori)" tradução
The We Want Sounds label specialises in finding and reviving rare, deleted, lost and collectable records. They are continuing with their Meiko Kaji reissue series in partnership with Teichiku Records and Meiko Kaji herself, with the release of "Gincho Wataridori," her debut album from 1972. This reissue comes with deluxe Gatefold sleeve LP, OBI strip and an insert featuring new liner notes by Hashim Kotaro Bharoocha. We Want Sounds says:
Japanese actress Meiko Kaji, who was born in Tokyo, has become a worldwide cult icon thanks to Quentin Tarantino when he heavily based his Kill Bill films on the 1973 revenge genre film 'Lady Snowblood,' one of Kaji's most famous films. Renowned for her roles in the highly acclaimed 'Stray Cat Rock' and 'Female Prisoner Scorpion' film series, Kaji became one of the most famous exploitation actresses in Japan in the early 70s. Invited by film studios to sing the theme for many of her films, she ended up recording five albums for Teichiku between 1972 and 1974, which have become increasingly sought-after over the years.
"Gincho Wataridori" was the very first album released by Meiko Kaji in 1972 and is a great mix of kayokyoku (Japanese Pop), traditional Enka Music, psych rock and 70s cinematic groove. The album features the song "Gincho Wataridori" a theme song for the eponymous gangster film released by Toei Films in 1972 (and known outside of Japan as "Wandering Ginza Butterfly"). On the cover of the album, Meiko actually wears the kimono she wears in the film. The song showcases Kaji's distinctive singing over a funky backbeat and fuzz guitar. It was recorded straight after the shooting of the film and Kaji remembers the recording process, as told to Hashim Bharoocha for the liner notes: "After two weeks of filming, mentally I’m still in my character, so I would go to the studio to record the song in that mindset. So when I’m recording my vocals, I’m still acting.”
