Kapela ze Wsi Warszawa / Warsaw Village Band & Bassałyki - Kalinowy mostek / Bridge of Wayfarer Tree
The Warsaw Village Band was formed in 1998 as much to preserve Polish folk music at home as it was to bring it to new audiences elsewhere. They play traditional instruments such as frame drums, the hurdy-gurdy and the suka, a Polish folk fiddle from the 17th century. They combine that tradition with modern elements and in particular on the new album Sploty, keyboards and electronica, percussion, and tenor sax.
Sploty is the featured album this week and I’ll be playing four songs from it.
Girls in Airports x Teitur - Angankari
I’ve never played anything from the Faroes before – But there is, at least, one very successful musician from there called Teitur Lassen. He, along with the Danish band Girls in Airports has a new album Kvæði which translates as Poem. Kvæði are the old ballads of the Faroe Islands, accompanied by the Faroese chain dance. I’ll be playing Fullur sjómaður which won’t won’t need a translation. That’s not the song above: the audio isn’t great, but gives you an idea of their music.
Va y Viene (Video Oficial)
A lot of the music that I play here on Around the World is based in traditional music – Fado from Portugal, Sevdah from the Balkans. Rebetiko from Greece, Forró, and Carimbo from Brazil. I’ve even playes modern versions of traditional Tuvan and Mongolian music. But the one that constantly impresses me is the range and influence of Flamenco in modern Spanish music. Almasäla is from Andalusia the home of Flamenco. Va y vienie is her new single.
