This Week’s Featured Album: Maher Cissoko’s Kora World
I can’t find any videos supporting Maher Cissoko’s Kora World, but I found this documentary you might find interesting.
Sousou & Maher Cissoko | Full Documentary | Kora
Sousou & Maher Cissoko both grew up in families of musicians, and it was the interest and love for the West African kora (a harp lute) that brought them together. Maher Cissoko was born to be a jali and a kora player and was raised in the world famous Cissokho family in Ziguinchor, Senegal. Sousou Cissoko comes from Höör, Sweden, where she was raised in a family of musicians. The first time she heard the kora she fell in love with it. After finishing high school she travelled to the Gambia and Senegal where she learned to play kora under the tutalage of Alagi Mbye and Solo Cissoko. Today Sousou is one of very few female kora players in the world. This film was made at Sousou and Maher's retreat center in Abene, Senegal. It was directed and produced by Mattias Olsson for Campfire Stories. Watch more of our films at https://campfire-stories.org/
Also on the show
Caminante - Soema Montenegro (Album Círculo Radiante 2023)
Translation of notes on the video:
This video was recorded in the Quebrada de las Señoritas, Uquía [northern Argentina] in April 2023. Three months later, indigenous communities of Jujuy, teachers, workers, and residents began a process of resistance against the constitutional reform of the province, suffering violent repression.
To those walkers in defense of water and cultural and territorial rights, a deep gratitude. I join those demands with my song and my heart.
And there will be a hint of Christmas music - but not what you might usually hear. For example:
Theia - Te Kaiwhakaora O Te Ao
Translation of notes with video:
"When there were no Māori Christmas carols, I composed 'Te Kaiwhaora o Te Ao.' Music is a heritage. It is hoped that this song will be performed in marae, churches and universities throughout New Zealand as a school for immigrants" - Theia
If we don’t meet before, may I wish you a peaceful and happy Christmas.
Next week the show begins a two week review of 2023.
