This Week’s Featured Album - HAZ by La Yegros
La Yegros - Bailarin (Official Video)
La Yegros, (Mariana Alejandra Yegros), is an Argentinian singer-songwriter. While she is from Buenos Aires, her family come from the rural rain forests of the north of Argentina, bordering Brazil. In her music she combines the folk and folkloric of Chamamé (a party folk music from Northeast Argentina), Copolas, and Cumbia, with rap, dub and funk.
After playing in bands, she began a solo career in 2013 releasing her first album Viene de Mi. In 2015 she released Magnetismo. The album is a mix of influences including Argentinian folk and EDM expanding into north and west African folk music – from Rai to Malian blues – hip-hop, rock, tropical pop, reggae, and dancehall.
Haz – this week’s featured album – is perhaps surprisingly only her fourth.

“Feminine, joyous and tropical. It’s a revolution you can dance to.”- Time Out
Natascha Rogers - Aniafa (Official video)
A Dutch musician whose parents have American roots, Natascha Rogers says she draws inspirations from Yoruba (west African) spirits, Afro-Latin rhythms and her Native American ancestry.
“This album marks a rebirth for Natascha Rogers, as it symbolizes her return to the piano, her first instrument. Channelling these inspirations for Onaida, Natascha Rogers, has created a space of her own, where themes of humanity, spirituality, nature and womanhood are centre stage while also paying tribute to her ancestors. Sung in English, Spanish, or Yoruba, the album is a tapestry of intimate ballads and universal prayers, drawing inspiration from dreams, Amerindian poetry (Joy Harjo), and Cuban santería with ritualistic batá drum pulsations. On the powerful folk-tinged song "The West", she invited gifted singer-songwriter Piers Faccini.” [Website]
In a 5 star review Songlines magazine said, “It is impossible to pigeon-hole Onaida into any particular genre as it takes us on a beguiling journey through many lands and themes.”
EL GATO NEGRO - Les Tournesols - ACOUSTIC SEA SONG
El Gato Negro has been travelling throughout South America for fifteen years. On his journeys he has studied the traditional rhythms of cumbia, salsa, paso, cha-cha, and bolero, working with both some of the street musicians and the big names in South American music including La Yegros whose album is featured this week.
His new album Tigre Qui Pleure was made with French musician and producer Guts and recorded in Dakar, Senegal and Bagnolet, near Paris.
New settings and characters encountered, which inspire new steps and more urban sounds. El Gato Negro is now forming a new quintet team. To make us move on this multicolored tarmac, with the vitality of a papaya/limed lemon mix (Bendita primavera). The Cuban clave always gives rhythm to the whole in heartbeats (Toca y toca, La tierra de mis abuelos). The brass instruments, still present on this album, give way to live keyboards and machines. A wedding in Ouagadougou between Cumbia and Soukouss. An original fusion created with new guitarist and co-composer ETIENNE CHOQUET. To the harmonies of the balafon of SEYDOU DIABATÉ KANAZOÉ. In the voice of KANDY GUIRA (Oumou Sangaré). The drums of CYRIL ATEF (M, Bumcello) on the album. All balanced by the mastering of the wizard ALEX GOPHER (Lomepal, Flavien Berger, Eddy de Pretto, Christine and the Queen). [Website]
