This week’s Featured Album - Médikamen by Corey Ledet Zydeco
The roots of Zydeco go deep into history, perhaps 400 years. Recorded Zydeco goes back 100 years with early recordings from the mid-1920s. It is still flourishing. Zydeco is the creole music of the southwest of Louisiana. It blends blues, rhythm and blues, and music indigenous to the Louisiana Creoles and the Native American people of Louisiana. It’s not the same as the Cajun music of Louisiana but they are often mentioned in the same breath.
If like me you grew up listening to Blues and R & B, John Mayall and Rory Gallagher you can’t help but have a soft spot for Zydeco. This week’s featured album – Médikamen by Corey Ledet Zydeco was released last August, but I’ve been listening to it for the last couple of weeks.
Médikamen (avèk Kermit Ruffins)
Corey Ledet is a Grammy-nominated musician. He is rooted in the Southwest Louisiana style of zydeco, but he also embraces blues, gospel and rock and roll combining his own original tunes and covers and classics.
While he now lives in Parks, Louisiana, a village of fewer than 700 people on the banks of the Bayou Teche, Corey was born and raised in Houston, Texas. There at the age of 10, he started picking up shows as drummer for Houston’s Wilbert Thibodeaux and the Zydeco Rascals and slowly learned his way around the main instrument of the style – the accordion.
I say I think this is his 14th album, but I’ve tried to contact him through his Facebook page and while I’m still waiting for an answer, I did learn that he is probably the only Grammy nominated musicians who is also an Amazon delivery driver.

Adrian Sutherland - Precious
Born and raised in Canada’s Far North, Adrian Sutherland is from Attawapiskat First Nation. His melding of rock, roots, folk and blues draws inspiration from his life, the land, and his Cree culture.
His new single is Precious and is taken from Precious Diamonds, his second solo album due on 15 March was produced in Nashville by Colin Linden,
Released in 2021, “When The Magic Hits” earned nominations at the 2022 JUNO Awards and the 2023 Canadian Folk Music Awards. Title track Magic Hits won Best Music Video from San Francisco’s 47th American Indian Film Festival, while Scared reached #1 on the internationally-recognized Indigenous Music Countdown.
In addition to musician, Adrian is a cultural leader and traditional “knowledge keeper” who is fluent in Omushkegowuk Cree. He is writing a book for Penguin Random House Canada about being born and raised in Attawapiskat.
DINA ELWEDIDI - BANDAHLAK | دينا الوديدي - بندهلك
One of my favourite musicians is Dina Elwedidi from Cairo. She produces music in both acoustic and electronic media. This is a new single, launched on YouTube last week. It is from the upcoming album, Benna.
Wynona Bleach | Swim in the Bay
Here’s one from my hometown. Wynona Bleach are almost family - I’ve known Melyssa Shannon since almost the day she was born. “This is another DIY-shoestring-budget video from Wynona Bleach.” They say. “The single is out now on all good streaming platforms via Fierce Panda Records.”
