Hello - this is the second edition of the Around the World preview. Thanks for reading and subscribing.
Each week there are two updates. One, like this previewing the show, the other the following week, with the running order and perhaps some notes.
Around the World is on Ferry FM and Slice Audio on Sundays at 10:00 pm to midnight and on Tuesdays at 7:00 pm on Bangor FM, Lisburn’s 98FM and FM105 Down Community Radio. Links below. You can hear last week’s show here.
Featured Album this week: Debs Erwin has suggested this week’s featured album “Bruce Parry Presents Amazon Tribe - Songs for Survival”. She says “Some great collaborations, though to what extent there was 'actual' collaboration I'm not sure...” Indeed, “collaboration” might indeed not be the right word. Much of the music is inspired by field recordings, but even so it is a great listen.
The double album compilation was first released on 13 October 2008. It ranges through many styles of music including Electronic, Folk, World, & Country. I’ll be playing four tracks on the show from Skin, Robot Club & Adi Tribe, KT Tunstall, Adam Freeland & Suri Tribe, and Apparatjik.
If you have an album in mind that could be featured on the show, then drop me a line via my blog.
New music: I played a track from Mon Laferte last week. It was a random choice from this outstanding Chilean singer. When I played it, I hadn’t realised that she had just released a new album SEIS. Like so many albums being released just now SEIS was recorded in lockdown. Musicians have responded in many different ways following the shock of not being able to perform, tour and even record. As terrible as the lockdown has been to the whole music industry, there have been some positive outcomes. Some musicians chose to work through ideas they’d not been able to before. Mon Laferte is one. She explores some of the folk music of Chile and beyond; her musical heritage, something she had wanted to do. A track from it in the show this week and next week SEIS will be the featured album. There is a video of a live performance from this extraordinary performer here.
Rhiannon Giddens' new album "They're Calling Me Home" was recorded in Ireland where Rhiannon has been living through the lockdown with Francesco Turrisi, her partner and musical collaborator. Released a few weeks ago on Nonesuch Records, I’ll be playing the track “Avalon”:
Russia’s Dolphin is a favourite on the show. He is rock/electronic musician active since 1989 when he as 18. He was named best artist at the 2004 MTV Russian Music Awards. He has a new single (but the video is not up to much) Иду искать (I'm going to search).
There’s not a lot of Albanian music about but a new album revives a rarely heard tradition. This week (and for many more weeks) I’ll be playing a track from Tirana-Tirona Allstars’ album Tirana 100.
More new music from Made Kuti who is Fela's grandson and Femi’s son. He grew up in The New Afrika Shrine in Lagos, studied at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London, and has played in Femi’s Positive Force band from a young age.
Other and Older: Listen out for Luis Peixoto (Portugal), Cocanha (Toulouse, Occitania, France), Fernando Milagros (Chile) artists from Brazil, France, Hungary, Ireland and cool summer music from Mauritius, Cuba, Jamaica, and USA
And do you remember when the Teardrop Explodes sang in French?
And finally: Tiny Desk Concerts is an off shoot of the NPR radio show All Song Considered. You can either download it as a podcast or watch it on YouTube. The idea – like most of the best ideas – is very simple. Bands are invited to play a short concert in the radio shows production office. Surrounded by desks and papers and books and the usual debris created in a radio production. Because bands have not been able to visit the office for around a year, the producers are highlighting some older videos and there are so many gems appearing.
Mother Falcon’s appearance was in August 2013 – they from Austin Texas and are described as a chamber-rock band.
The line-up I can count is 5 Brass and woodwind, 2 cellos, double bass, mandolin, 3 violins and accordion. The sound good but look even better.
Get Involved: I’m always glad to get your suggestions – contact me through my blog where you can also find the show’s archive, sound files and running orders.
