This Week’s Featured Album - Dreamer’s Motel by Joachim Cooder
Joachim Cooder - Come Along Buddy
Dreamer’s Motel is one more step for Joachim Cooder in establishing himself as a solo artist in his own right, not simply the son of a famous and fantastically talented father, or an in demand session musician.
I couldn’t find a video to mark the release of Dreamer’s Motel. Come Along Buddy is from his previous album, Over That Road I'm Bound.
Joachim Cooder is an American artist who has been playing drums since he was 5 years old – his inspiration is said to have been Jim Keltner. (Keltner played with some of the most famous musicians of the 1970s; Leon Russell, Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett, Joe Cocker, Carly Simon, George Harrison.) “Keltner became Ry Cooder's go-to drummer, recording with him on many of his albums for over 40 years.” [*]
Joachim started touring with his father from a young age. It is no surprise he became a professional musician making his first professional recording at 14 on Ry Cooder’s 1993 album A Meeting by the River and appearing on the classic Buena Vista Social Club at 19
Dreamer's Motel is his new and his 4th album following Love on a Real Train (2012), Fuchsia Machu Picchu EP (2018), and Over That Road I'm Bound: The Songs of Uncle Dave Macon (2020). He has also performed in at least 10 other albums.
Dogo du Togo & The Alagaa Beat Band - Avoudé
I love the sound of the guitar on this and the fabulously catchable rhythm!
“Born in Lome, Togo, Dogo played in different bands in the Togolese capital before moving to the United States and founding the DC based Afropop/Afrofunk band Elikeh. Known for their high-energy live performances and original material, Elikeh has released 3 albums and an EP.” [*]
The foundation of Togolese artist Dogo’s music is traditional Togolese rhythms. He incorporates ritual voodoo melodies, and festive melodies such as bobobo played by Ewe people in the Region des Plateaux in Togo [*], and Simpa rhythm “played in the northern part of Togo by the Tem people. Simpa originated from Sierra Leone’s Gumbe (brought by the freed slaves who relocated during the 18th century from Jamaica) and are about immigration, social justice and personal experiences. [*]

Songhoy Blues - Héritage: The Documentary (Ep. 2 Toukambela)
I would normally expect hard guitar sounds mixed with African rhythms - the sounds you hear on Dogo du Togo - to come from Songhoy Blues. But their new album would appear to be an exploration of their heritage. Indeed Héritage is the name of their next album. Just a few tracks are available at the moment, one being Toukambela.
Toukambela is a reworking of a song recorded by one of Mali’s most revered dance bands, Orchestre Kanaga de Mopti, released in 1970 in the legendary Anthology of Malian Music series. Listen to ‘Toukambela’ now: https://ffm.to/songhoy_blues-toukambela Songhoy Blues have announced the release of their fourth album, Héritage, to be released on Transgressive Records on Friday 17th January 2025. [*]
The 2:19: I’ll be playing a track from the forthcoming album by The 2:19’s forthcoming album Keep My Will Strong. The album will be released at the end of January. There will be more information about how to find it then.
