Mdou Moctar - "Funeral for Justice" (Official Music Video)
The Tuareg people inhabit the Sahara desert in an area that stretches from south-west Libya to southern Algeria, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. They are traditionally nomadic. And one of their cultural achievements exported to the rest of the world is Desert Blues. One of the great exponents is guitarist Mdou Moctar.
He was born in Niger sometime between 1984 and 1986. Growing up he listened to music by one of the originators of Desert Blues (or Tuareg rock) Abdallah Oumbadougou. He developed a passion for guitar music but his family disapproved of electric music. The story goes, he built his first guitar using bicycle cables for strings.
His first album Anar was released in 2008, and reissued 2014. His new album Funeral for Justice (Matador, 2024) is the featured album this week.
