This week’s Featured Album - Passeport by Lass
Lass - Massamba (clip officiel)
I was very impressed two years ago by Bumayé the first album by Lass a Senegalese singer. His new album – released today (19 April), is even better. It gets you up to dance in the evening and gets you out of bed the next morning.
Passeport includes some notable guests including David Walters and Roberto Fonseca. Over those two years since the release of his debut, Lass has played more than 150 shows in Europe including Montreux Jazz festival, Paris with Fatoumata Diawara and Roberto Fonseca, and in London’s Jazz Cafe with French producer Guts.
Budapest Ritmo
I almost literally stepped off an aeroplane and walked into the studio this week – although there was a bus ride, a train ride, and a cup of coffee with my feet up in between. Just like a couple of weeks ago when I’d returned from Bratislava, I had no time to properly prepare the show. So this week, lots of music and little of me for the two hours. This time I was in Budapest – something I previewed last week, and I’ll reflect a little on Budapest Ritmo in Part 2.
Here are a couple of videos to remind me of a great time in Budapest with a lot of old and new friends.
Buzz' Ayaz - Zali (Official Video)
There were many highlights during the Ritmo weekend, but among the most memorable was the very relaxed Saturday afternoon on the terrace of the Akvárium Klub with Antonis Antoniou playing a fabulous DJ set. Apart from being a musician, DJ, producer and academic, Antonis is a member or founder of at least three bands, Monsieur Doumani, Trio Tekke Band and, the newest, Buzz' Ayaz.
Puuluup - Liigutage vastu (Official Video)
While I’ve always enjoyed listening to Estonian duo Puuluup, I didn’t “get” them until last Saturday night in a fantastic performance that brought the whole event (almost) to a close. Listening to their records and watching them live are two very different experiences. Their records are pretty relaxed and harmonious. Live they have expend an enormous amount to energy dancing and generally messing around. And they are hilarious! I haven’t laughed as much at a concert since John Cooper Clarke in Belfast in the early 1980s.
Go see them if you can.
Oh, and they (with 5MIINUST) are representing Estonia at Eurovision this year.
Where and when to listen.
