Featured Album: Céu Um Gosto de Sol. In 2020 I was quite taken but not sure about APKÁ, Céu’s last album. Any reservations have been left behind by Um Gosto de Sol. But this is not a work of original compostions. There are 14 cover versions including Jimi Hendrix’s “May This Be Love” – a complete and acoustic deconstruction. There’s the MoR classic “Feelings” (a song I have never liked, but this is a massive improvement on the strangulated version by many artists!) and some Latin classics I have no idea about - so mostly new to me.
Um Gosto de Sol is Céu’s fifth album. The Latin Grammy award winner may not be known well outside her immediate fan base (even though it is a very big fan base), but this is an album to introduce her to a wider audience. [More about Céu here]
Another Album of Covers: Native Sons by Los Lobos. It is an album of covers stretching through generations and genres. The songs I immediately recognised were the old Beach Boys classic Sail on Sailor, and there’s Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth”. I played their cover of Jackson Brown’s “Jamaica Say You Will” several weeks ago and promptly forgot about the album. I’m glad I’ve rediscovered it. There are also covers from Mexican and Californian bands from the 60s and 70s I had no idea about – It is a tremendous album – a real gateway into another era of music. [Pitchfork Review]
And Music from here? The show kicks off with a sound of modern Ireland – Irish Zimbabwean singer song writer, Shiv and a song that she co-wrote in Paris. And from Belfast? Belfast has been famous for music for decades. It’s not just the 70s and 80s punk – they’re the traditional Irish and the Ulster-Scots heritage, there’s the new electronica and the abundance of singer songwriters. But there is a sound often overlooked and it was one of the most important musical traditions.
It was born in Sailortown, in the docks. Merchant seamen – in the main – came home from working in north America in the 1950s and 1960s. They brough back records – blues and R&B that influenced new bands in the late 50s early 60s They played the Maritime, Sammy Houston’s Jazz Club and into the mid 70s The Pound.
Belfast R&B … Belfast Roots music. And the 2:19 are of that tradition – recently formed with a first album Revelator and I think they just sound splendid.
There is a stack more music. Please join me or go to Mixcloud after the show.
