Hello – production of the newsletter has been a bit sluggish over the last weeks of the summer, but think we’re in full swing again. Thanks to Damien for the feedback. If you’d like to send me some feedback on the show or the newsletter, you can use this section of the blog, or if you know one of my email addresses you can use it.

The running order is here on the blog.

Hello and welcome to this week’s preview.

Album of the Week: Yes, perhaps I do play too much fado, and perhaps my trip to Porto for WOMEX will curtail my enthusiasm, but this week’s album is modern fado at its best. I’ll play four tracks from Gisela João’s AuRora.

She was born in the north of Portugal in 1983 and even in her youngest years loved fado music.

“Fado music is a form of Portuguese singing that is often associated with pubs, cafés, and restaurants. This music genre officially originated in Portugal around the 1820s, though it is thought to have much earlier origins. Fado is known for how expressive and profoundly melancholic it is.”

Her interest became a passion when she moved to Porto to study. Porto along with Lisbon is a centre for the music. Gisela recorded her first album there in 2009 with Atlantihda before moving to Lisbon to make music her profession. She didn’t go into a studio until 2012, releasing her first album in 2013.

Three more followed and AuRora is the most recent. I saw her perform in 2015 or 2016 and it was a commanding performance- although I had heard her music before then, it wasn’t until I saw her livce that I really appreciated her talent.

You should also look out for two tracks re-mixed by Lisbon DJ Xinobi

The first is Fado Para Esta Noite

The second Tábuas do Palco I is a version of the album track on AuRora. The video is here

Other music on the show: The Lakou Mizik & Joseph Ray album Leave the Bones is tremendous – turn up the volume and let it rip.

Joseph Ray is a Grammy-winning electronic music artist. Lakou Mizik has sought to re-define people's conceptions of their home Haiti through its music. The nine piece band, formed in 2010, is emblematic of the melting pot that is Haiti's musical culture.

Joseph Ray, had never heard of Lakou when he arrived in Haiti in 2015, having volunteered to teach a course at Haiti's only music production and audio engineering school, the Artist's Institute. Ray stumbled on Lakou at a tiny beach side club in Jakmel.

Leave the Bones paints a musical portrait, a fresh glimpse of an oft misrepresented country. Through Vodou chants, chest-pounding Rara dance tunes and contemporary protest songs, the record conveys the listener to Haiti's spiritual heart, a place that remains a compelling mystery for foreigners and a source of pride for every Haitian.
