Tiken Jah Fakoly - Où est-ce que tu vas ? (clip officiel)
The Ivorian reggae musician Tiken Jah Fakoly has released his (officially) sixteenth album (although I count 17. The first two from 1993 and 1994 were only available on cassette and are now withdrawn.) In 1996 his (officially) first album Mangercratie was released. Acoustic marks 17 years of releases. On Acoustic his band include guitar, n’goni, balafon, kora, soku violin, percussion, vocals, and talking drums. Additional musicians include Malian singer Djely Tapa, the London based Tanzanian artist Tiggs Da Author, Horace Andy from Jamaica, and Brazil’s Chico César.
I’ve been playing tracks from the album since its release and have grown to appreciate it very much, leading to Acoustic being the featured album this week.
Andrew Gurruwiwi Band - Gatjumak [Official Video]
But we start the show here … 'Gatjumak' was the debut single from the Andrew Gurruwiwi Band released last year. This is what Australia’s ABC had to say about them when the single was released last March.
Andrew Gurruwiwi Band are a high-energy, 8-piece funk band who have honed their chops on the beach at Birrtjimi and in the dirt of Yirrkala, the Andrew Gurruwiwi Band write real funk jams in their native tongue, Yolngu Matha. Their sound is truly fresh - Yolngu Funk - a style only hinted at previously on the impossible-to-find pair of 7-inches cut by George Rrurrambu & Birdwave, that now go for hundreds of dollars on Discogs.
I look forward to an album sometime this year.
Winners of Radio_Head Awards 2023
I spent last weekend in Bratislava at the Radio and Television Slovakia’s Radio_Head music awards. A full list of winners (should you want to explore further) is here. And you can get some videos and photos from the evening here on Facebook. Here are some of my photos on Facebook.
On this week’s show I’ll be playing three of the winners:
Neraev’s “Who's Irene?” won Record of the year 2023 in the Electronic Music section
Pod Obločkom by Ondro a kamaráti won the Record of the year 2023 in the World Music section.
And Single of the year was Berlin Manson & FVLCRVM’s Hotel Kyjev
The highlight for me was the final performance by four women electronic musicians (below) who performed together for the first and I hope not the last time. There doesn’t seem to be a video available yet. I’ll point to it sometime if I find it.
Theory and Routine, by Ovarius
My thanks to Vladimír “Potkan” Potančok and Petra Pančíková of Radio Television Slovakia for their help and assistance planning and staying in Bratislava.
