This week’s Featured Album: Folk and Great Tunes from Belarus
From CPL-Music’s Folk and Great Tunes series, this double CD features two songs from 10 bands plus one extra. On the show as usual, I’ll play four tracks from the album which range from traditional folk, folk rock, and folk metal. Two of the bands are in the videos below and here is a comprehensive review from A Green Man Review.
Aratseya - Галкі (live)
“Aratseya (Арацэя) is music in the style of world music, folk. We present to the audience two diverse musical programs: "folk disco" - ancient folk songs in a new, modern sound; world rock hits on ethnic instruments. During our performance, you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the wheel lyre, Irish bouzouki, zaleyka, percussion, and feel the energy of authentic vocals.” Website
PAWA
“PAWA consists of seven musicians performing a unique mixture of traditional European medieval music and modern electronic sound. Musicians use such an unusual set of musical instruments as: traditional Belarusian bagpipe called “DUDA”, modern top-shelf synthesizers, exotic percussions, electric guitar, wooden pipe instruments, violin, cittern and much more. Band plays mainly Belorussian (historically Magnus Ducatus Lithuaniae and Rzeczpospolita Obojga Narod?w) traditional and medieval music but that not all. PAWAs repertoire consists of instrumental compositions and vocal songs from other world regions include: Sweden, Poland, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Germany, France and so on.” YouTube
Amadou Bagayako
Since the last time we met, the great Malian musician Amadou Bagayako’s funeral was held in Bamako. Among the mourners were his wife, Miriam Doumbia, and Salif Keita. Amadou and his wife had formed the Grammy-nominated Amadou and Miriam. They met in 1976 at the Institute for the young blind in Bamako. Amadou was then a 21-year-old musician, Mariam an 18-year-old singer.
Amadou and Miriam are perhaps best known for composing the official song for the 2006 football World Cup in Germany and playing at the closing ceremony for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
In 2004, their album "Dimanche a Bamako" (Sunday in Bamako), produced by Franco-Spanish star Manu Chao, brought them worldwide success.
Amadou & Mariam (feat. Manu Chao) - Sénégal Fast Food (Official Music Video)
Their 2008 album Welcome to Mali was nominated for Best Contemporary World Music Album at the Grammys Their song "Sabali" was placed 15 on Pitchfork Media's Top 100 Best Tracks of 2008. It also became the most-played French single worldwide of 2009.
Their last recordings were at the end of last year in London’s Abbey Road studios.
Baía de Janeiro | Thiago Amud
Thiago Amud's fifth album, Enseada Perdida (Lost Cove), showcases his evolution as a composer and musician. The project gained momentum when Zeca Veloso introduced Amud's compositions to Chico Buarque and Caetano Veloso, leading to their participation in the album. This collaboration allowed Amud to craft a cohesive collection that balances diverse voices and styles.
The album reflects Amud's return to Rio de Janeiro after three years in Belo Horizonte during the COVID-19 pandemic. This period of reconnection with his roots inspired a more intimate and lyrical approach compared to his earlier, more epic works. The compositions feature concise yet rich arrangements, drawing parallels to the bossa nova method of synthesizing samba.
Enseada Perdida traverses various lyrical landscapes, from the narrative-driven "Baía de Janeiro," a samba-enredo tracing Rio's history, to introspective tracks like "Dela" and "Orgia." Amud's creative process begins with voice and guitar, followed by detailed arrangements using music notation software. The recordings feature layered vocals, brass, and strings, with contributions from notable musicians such as Sérgio Krakowski and Joana Queiroz. The album intertwines personal lyricism with reflections on contemporary themes, offering listeners an immersive experience into the depths of Brazilian music. (from Brazil Calling)
Notte della Taranta 2020 - ELA, ELA – MU CONDÀ (canto in grico)
In 2020, while the world was closed, La Notte della Taranta was held as usual in Melpignano in Puglia, Italy. It is one of the nine towns of Grecìa Salentina and a centre for the traditional music of the region. But because of lockdowns, the usual 250,000 audience was absent. Paolo Buonvino was the guest concert master, leading the Orchestra Popolare La Notte Della Taranta, who were joined by Roma Sinfonietta. The soundtrack is not usually released, but it is available as Taranta Reimagined. And a great video.
