This week’s featured album: Ritual by Rita Donte
Rita Donte - Paseo de las misiones (Official Video)
Rita Donte is a Cuban singer-songwriter now based in Mexico. Her music weaves her Cuban heritage with the sounds of Mexican son jarocho - a regional folk musical style of Mexican Son from Veracruz, a Mexican state along the Gulf of Mexico - and other global influences.
In an interview with 15Questions.net she said,
“From a very young age, I felt that I could sing, but it wasn’t until my early 20s that I consciously began to explore my voice as an instrument. My first performance was in 2012 at El Callejón de los Peluqueros in ArteCorte, Papito, in Old Havana, where I presented my first musical project, Tierra Santa. I remember the experience as a truly magical night. The concert was very special—the music was beautiful, and the audience was full of people dancing and feeling joyful. Others watched attentively from the small balconies of their homes.”
Notes from Bandcamp:
There are journeys that, rather than having a destination, propose a circular path. Ritual, the new album by Rita Donte, is the logbook of one such journey. It is a return—not only to the sonic roots that shaped her from her childhood in Cuba but also to the questions that once dreamed of becoming songs. However, this return is not merely an exercise in nostalgia; it’s the collision of her origins with the lessons and landscapes that have shaped her: the first family piano, the arduous years of flamenco dancing, the Havana street performances with the Gigantería group, the sunsets along the Malecón, the kaleidoscopic bustle of Mexico City, and the serenity of Baja California’s beaches.
Mostar Sevdah Reunion - Chaje Shukarije (single)
A new single from Mostar Sevdah Reunion is always celebrated on Around the World. And this time a change of vocalist from the version of Chaje Shukarije on Bosa Mara, their current album. The Spanish Gypsy singer Pedro Heredia Reyes, better known as Pedro El Granaino, was on the album, but he has been replaced for the single by Antonija Batinić – MSR’s regular vocalist. I think an important switch, making the song more accessible to a general audience and friendlier to radio play.
The song is Chaje Shukarije was once made famous by the Macedonian singer Esma Redzepova many years ago. that’s the job of MSR – finding those old Balkan and Gypsy songs and giving them new life.
Esma Redzepova - Caje sukarije
Esma Redzepova recorded "Čaje Šukarije" in 1961. According to The Guardian. The song was a part of her first recording with Ansambl Teodosievski, released by Jugoton. On this video she is performing on Albanian TV in 2011 on “Gypsy Night at Songs of the Century”. It’s a fantastic performance.

Amalemba (Live) at Ankole Grill, Kilimani, Nairobi , 4th Sep, 2024 - Kasiva Mutua
While Kasiva Mutua learned drumming inspired by folktales told by her grandmother, she has developed her own knack for powerful beats. One of Kenya’s leading percussionists and drummers, her expressive playing can tell a story on its own, or keep a band perfectly in the pocket. Today, she’s an international touring percussionist, integrating African traditional music with modern styles such as jazz, hip-hop, reggae, funk and more. One of only a few African women playing percussion continentally and internationally, Kasiva plays music to celebrate her community’s spirit, tell her people's stories and elevate the place of African woman in music. She’s been involved in numerous intercultural musical collaborations including The Nile Project, 1Beat, x-Jazz women, Coke Studio Africa, and more.
