Vimma biography
VIMMA is a young group from Helsinki. Its first seeds were planted in 2014 from Pessi Jouste's desire to play violin in a rock context. Earlier he had played progressive rock in a school band. VIMMA's debut album Meri ja Avaruus (= Ocean and Space) was released through Tampere-based Eclipse Music in 2019. The following year they were awarded as the Newcomer of the Year at Etnogaala, the Finnish World Music Awards 2020. The band themselves label their music as Progressive Folk, but the emphasis is certainly on the first word.
Besides rock and ethno, their eclectic music combines elements of chamber music, hip-hop, spoken word, funk and jazz, thus approaching RIO/Avant-Prog. On top of this musical diversity, the Finnish lyrics are filled with social criticism and environmental issues. Both Pessi Jouste, who is the band's primary composer, and vocalist-lyricist Eeva Rajakangas are involved in the environmental movement Elokapina (XR Finland). The expression of Rajakangas is often closer to an intense poetry performance than to ordinary singing. It's worth pointing out that the band prefers to write their name in capitals; 'vimma' is a Finnish word for frenzy or mania.
The members of the nine-piece group have musically diverse backgrounds, stretching from classical and folk music to metal and street dance. In VIMMA's music everything can be in an equal dialogue. According to Pessi Jouste, we want to write music that makes people think and act, to talk of topics that need to be dealt with.

Oh Mother - Ahmed Moneka
Ahmed Moneka is an award-winning Iraqi theatre and film actor and musician living in Toronto, Canada. He is a citizen of both Canada and Iraq.
Moneka is a multidisciplinary artist, specializing Afro-Middle Eastern music as well as acting for theatre and film.
Raised in Baghdad, Iraq where he experienced a rich musical culture that celebrated and preserved Afro-Iraqi traditions. "As an artist he aims to promote acceptance and foster a sense of global community by bridging cultures and dispelling misconceptions about Arab communities." [*]
The album Kanzafula was released about this time last year.
Ahmed first arrived in Toronto as a refugee from Iraq after appearing in a film about gay rights. Now, reflecting on this journey as actor and activist turned musician, he leads an all-star global ensemble, drawing his audience into an ecstatic celebration of life, performing across Canada and the U.S., as well as in Colombia, Chile, Morocco and South Korea.
Ahmed’s sophomore album Kanzafula was nominated for a 2025 Juno Award, and he has one both a Dora Award and a Stingray Rising Star Award in Toronto, along with numerous other accolades. Ahmed is currently working with The Tragically Hip on the 2026 production of It’s a Good Life If You Don’t Weaken, a musical based on the Tragically Hip's catalogue of Canadian classics with Come Away With Me producer Michael Rubinoff.
Farnaz Ohadi - Erev
Farnaz Ohadi left Iran in her teens, unable to sing, perform or even just live her life as a young girl, and emigrated to Canada with no knowledge of English or Western culture. [*]
Breath, her new album, draws Persian and flamenco music and dance together.
In an interview she told deflamenco.com “I love flamenco and Persian music equally, and when I think of one, I inevitably reach the other. Flamenco is the perfect vehicle for expressing my experiences and emotions, but I couldn’t do it without integrating my Persian essence. I have worked hard to make the fusion feel organic.”
Erev, is based on a well known and beautiful traditional Jewish folk song, “Erev Shel Shoshanim”. The original song speaks of a lovely garden where two lovers stand in admiration of each other. My version speaks more broadly of lovers uniting where one awaits for the other to open their heart to the expressed affection. The bigger picture here is a direct reference to current conflict we are witnessing between the Jewish and the Arab world. I began developing this song 6 years ago, but when the time came to publish the album finally , the timing could not be more poignant. I wish for peace, as cliche as that might sound, for people to recognise how fleeting life is and how heartbreaking it is to spend it at war mongering and seeking power.
