THIS WAS THE PREVIEW SENT LAST FRIDAY
Hello – this is the first edition of the Around the World preview on Substack.
What you can expect if you subscribe is two updates per week; one previewing the show (probably on a Friday), the other the following week, with the running order and perhaps some notes. If there is a really good reason there may be one more update in a week but that will be extremely rare.
You can hear Around the World on Ferry FM and Slice Audio on Sundays at 10:00 pm to midnight and on Tuesdays at 7:00 pm on Bangor FM, Lisburn’s 98FM and FM105 Down Community Radio. Links below for these stations and for the Around the World archive.
Featured Album this week: Ofra Harnoy is an Israeli cellist whose repertoire is usually Bach and Vivaldi. In 2018 she visited Newfoundland, fell in love with the place and bought a house. She began a project working on the music from the region and began to plan an album. For most musicians, the Covid pandemic has prevented them from travelling, touring, recording, and working with others. Other musicians have reacted differently. They have immersed themselves in new projects, researched ideas they had previously not had time to explore. On the Rock is one such project. Ofra Harnoy works with other Canadien musicians – not just from Newfoundland: Alan Doyle, Bob Hallett, Heather Bambrick, Amanda Cash, Kelly-Ann Evans, Fergus O’Byrne, Kendel Carson, and Maureen Ennis.
There will be four tracks on the show this week: Saltwater Joys, St. John’s Waltz / Cara’s Waltz, Two Ronnies, and Harbour Buffett Double.
More new music: Show favourite Altın Gün the Anatolian rock and psychedelic Turkish folk band from Amsterdam have a new album Yol. A new find KeTeKalles from Spain (although they formed in 2016). They are four women in close harmony with some addictive rhythms (video below). Warsaw Village Band have a magnificent new album Uwodzenie. I’ll be playing a track on this show and many others in future programmes.
Local Music: From Northern Ireland, Hannah Peel the electronic composer, performer and radio presenter has a new album. I’ll be playing a track from Fir Wave.
Older Music: March was the 100th anniversary of the birth of the composer and bandoneon player Astor Piazzolla. He was also a founder of the Nuevo tango. It’s not the first time I’ve played Piasola – and it won’t be the last. The Dark City Sisters formed in South Africa in 1958 – And Let-Lata Labout-Soa was probably recorded in the early 60s. You can find that on a compilation Let-Lata Labout-Soa and Other Hits.
Also, Yulduz Usmanova from Uzbekistan, The Band, Peter Tosh, Rachid Taha, and Rory Gallagher.
And the rest of the world: With 30 tracks on the show this is only a flavour. There is also music from Iceland, Chile, Uruguay, that place where Persia meets Ireland, Taiwan, and Serbia.
