As I write I’m the Old Town in Tallinn City which like Belfast recently won the UNESCO City of Culture title. This is Tallinn Music week. It opened officially yesterday with an open air concert by MTV Music Award winner Ivan Dorn from Ukraine. There is both a strong Ukraine theme running through the festival and much support for Ukraine in the city itself with flags seen everywhere especially on the walls of other embassies many of them here in the old town.
Dorn’s semi-hiphop semi-EDM and part pop-star performance pulled an audience of I estimate1000 or more from very young kids with their mums and dads - and while I was one of the oldest there (‘natch) I might well have not been the eldest.
My highlights so far were the excellent Duo Ruut who captivated the audience with their sometimes complex arrangements as the sat face to face playing … I don’t know, was it a double dulcimer?
They were one of the performers I had gone to see. Another playing last night was Suistamon Sähkö from Finland. They were outrageous, fun, funny, and had the whole rom danceing (in our slippers - the audience had to swap shoes for slippers in the way in.
I’ll gather more thoughts on the event for next week’s show. For this week you can expect music from, Ana Alcaide whose new album Ritual is featured this week. Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita have released thier new album (probably featured next week) and among others Antonio Castrignanò, Black Mango , Divanhana, Djeli Moussa Diawara, DLÙ, Hurja Halla, Kolonien, Manuel Maio, Mariel Mariel & Lido Pimienta, Rokia Koné & Jacknife Lee, Telefis, Širom, Sonoras Mil, Telefis, The Ano Nobo Quartet, Tone Of Voice Orchestra, and, Vokxen
