During the summer in particular I prefer to let the music speak for itself. This week - and in subsequent weeks - the emphasis will be on almost continuous music with minimal interruption. It’s even more important then to sign up here for previews and to go to my blog to see the running orders.
On this week’s show you can hear music from (among other places) Belize, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Congo, Cuba, Egypt, Haiti, Jamaica, Mali, New Orleans, Senegal, Serbia, South Africa, and Spain.
Here’s last week's show here - for part 1 follow this link, and for part 2 follow this link.

Featured Album
There’ll be four tracks from Rebolu’s Mi Herencia (My Heritage) this week on the show. Although the band is from New York City, it is their adopted home. The heritage they sing about and play tribute to is Colombia. Described by Smithsonian Folkways as “Leaders in the New Colombian Music movement … Rebolu’s vibrant, salsa-inspired music has its roots in the diverse Afrocentric rhythms of Colombia’s Caribbean coast.”
The Songlines Magazine review said “New York City has been tapping into Colombian music fever for several years now, what with festivals such as Encuentro celebrating renowned and emerging Colombian New York-based artists, and showcasing the Latin American country’s abundance of rhythms and styles, and the artists breathing new life into these traditions. At its (Afro-Colombian) vanguard are Rebolu, a long-established ensemble comprised of vocalists and multi-instrumentalists (and husband and wife) Ronald Polo and Johanna Castañeda, along with drummer Erica Parra and the revered percussionist and tambor player Morris Cañate.
“Respectful of their ancestral precedents, the group has continued to develop its upbeat, good time blend of everything from cumbia, rumba and rap to funk, folk and jazz, delivering songs with a social conscience and cultural pride at their core.”
As far as I’m concerned, it’s a perfect album for a summer party. Here’s a video for a performances in New York a few weeks ago.
Rebolu - "Los Herederos (The Heirs)" (Live at Queens Theater)
And there’s plenty of other party music from the present day and times gone by, including one of the many versions of this song.
Master KG Jerusalema (feat. Nomcebo Zikode)
And …
Djely Tapa - Le Sais Tu ?
And …
Alé Kumá & Dizzy Mandjeku - La Canoa Ranchá
And an updated version of this to mark Gilberto Gil’s 80th birthday.
Like the show, the newsletter this month is all about the music - not too many words.
