The featured album this week is by Al-Qasar formed by Thomas Attar Bellier. He did his growing up in music in Los Angeles, Lisbon, New York, Paris. He’s a French-American producer and has appeared on about two-dozen records.
He formed Al-Qasar in the Barbès area of Paris near Montmartre when he brought together musicians from France, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, and the United States.
On this new album guests include Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth) and Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys). Also guesting are the Sudanese singer Alsarah, Algerian singer and oud player Mehdi Haddab, and Egyptian Folk Singer Hend El Rawy
Stand by for what they describe as Arabic Fuzz. There’s an interview here from 2020 about the formation of the band.
Also on the show
I saw and met the vocal group Windborne recently and was treated to an hour of unique music. Their show “draws on the singers’ deep roots in traditions of vocal harmony, while the absolute uniqueness of their artistic approach brings old songs into the present.” [more]
The four members, Lauren Breunig, Jeremy Carter-Gordon, Lynn Rowan, and Will Rowan have known each other and have sung together for decades.
While they sing mainly songs from past movements of social struggle in USA and England, they include music from a variety of styles and languages with harmony singing traditions. Including this song from Corsica.
Stabat Mater - Windborne - Mont-Saint-Michel
Alicia Edelweiss - The Cockroaches and Me
Alicia Edelweiss is an Austro-British singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, actress and visual artist based in Vienna. She started her musical career as a teenage street musician without money, hitch-hiking all over Europe for two years. And that’s how this song emerged (as she tells it in her live performance). Her first studio album “When I’m enlightened, everything will be better” came out in 2019 and has led her to numerous festivals across Europe. More here.
Tacho - Movimiento
And sometimes I happen across tunes and have no idea how I found them. This is one. And I have no information at all!
