Gaye Su Akyol - Sen Benim Mağaramsın
Istanbul’s Gay Su Akyol’s new album is Anadolu Ejderi (Anatolian Dragon) on Dunganga Records & Glitterbeat Records. GSA’s music emanates initially from Turkish folk traditions via Anatolian psychedelia and western rock. This is her fourth and to my ears most confident album. And with it - like previous albums - wonderfully imaginative videos.

I don’t go out much these days – I might two or three times a year get on a plane and fly to interesting and exotic places to see interesting and exotic bands. I’m already planning to be at a celebration of Balkan music next September in Hungry.
Rarely do exotic bands come to play where I live, but this week I am looking forward to seeing the Mongolian throat singing metal band The Hu playing in the Ulster Hall (on Tuesday I think). I’ll be playing another track from their album this week.

The HU - Bii Biyelgee
That’s not the only throat singing on Around the World this week. From Tuva, in southern Siberia, Alash might be a little more traditional than The Hu

Oglumga (For My Son) - Alash
DjClick & Masha Natanson - My sister Ukraine
I’ll be playing another cut from DJClick and Masha Natanson. DJClick is a DJ and producer, on his own studio La Torre, Figueras (north east Spain between Barcelona and Andorra, and a label, No Fridge based in Paris. “One day, he’s exploring Indian rhythms with tablas players from the fringes of Rajasthan. Next day, he’s hitting the road around Bucharest with gypsy musicians. He can vanish in Essaouira during a Gnawa lila's night and reappear in Sevilla as part of a fiesta gitana.” [Bandcamp]
She is a violinist who has spent her life collecting and playing Romani music from all over the Balkans and to the east of the region. She began listening to gypsy music from the Carpathian Mountains which stretches from Czechia to Romania. Now her interest is even wider stretching to Greek Rebetiko and further east to Moldova and obviously – from the title of this track – Ukraine. I’ll be playing My Sister Ukraine from Violins against Bombs.
Berikely & Zama - Ela Ela
Not often we hear music from Madagascar. This week I’ll be playing a tune released a couple of years ago from Berikely & Zama.
“Berikely & Zama is a new Franco-Malagasy formation made up of four musicians and singers gathered around Berikely, Malagasy songwriter, singer and kabossy player, the emblematic guitar of Madagascar. It is the meeting of musicians with very different backgrounds but who have in common, the love of mixed music. It will take more than two years to forge an experience of Malagasy music which is not an easy approach for Westerners. This requires personal technical work and then group work. The group takes advantage of the stage to consolidate the repertoire, the objective being the recording of an album.” [More]
Have a good weekend, and join me when you can.
