THIS WEEK’S FEATURED ALBUM: The Three Seas - Antaḥkaraṇa
Prithibi - The Three Seas
The Three Seas, the Bengali–Australian ensemble long celebrated for their border‑crossing imagination, return this month with Antaḥkaraṇa—their most expansive and spiritually charged album yet. Recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios, the project draws on Baul mysticism, Himalayan folk traditions and a palette of rock, dub and global improvisation. The result, as the press notes put it, is “hypnotic, trance-like, and alive” — music that feels ritualistic without losing its contemporary pulse.
Formed in Santiniketan (a town near Bolpur in West Bengal, India) in 2009, the group has spent 15 years refining a sound that resists easy categorisation. Ancient devotional poetry sits inside dub grooves; Nepali folk melodies entwine with baritone saxophone; Bengali chants rise over electronica. On Antaḥkaraṇa — Sanskrit for “the inner instrument,” the meeting place of memory, intuition and identity — that fusion becomes a kind of philosophy. “We performed every day and wrote every night,” recalls bandleader Matt Keegan of their 2022 Edinburgh Fringe residency, a period of immersion that shaped the album’s momentum.
The recording sessions brought together the core quintet — Raju Das Baul, Deo Ashis Mothey, Gaurab “Gaboo” Chatterjee, Brendan Clark and Keegan — with producer Sarathy Korwar, whose UK–India sensibility adds a fresh lens. One of the album’s emotional anchors is “Prithibi,” written by Gaboo’s father, Gautam Chattopadhyay, a pioneer of Indian fusion. “We felt the weight of history and the joy of carrying it forward,” Keegan says.
Across its panoramic soundscape, Antaḥkaraṇa extends the band’s long-running exploration of transcultural collaboration. It is, as Gaboo puts it, “a true meeting of worlds” — and a reminder that music can still be a bridge between the seen and the unseen.
MWSOG - Llef Hir (Horizons Session)
The “wild Welsh wanderers” of MWSOG have returned with their second single, ‘Llef Hir’ (The Long Cry), a searing psychedelic folk anthem released on Dydd Miwsig Cymru (Welsh Language Music Day). Recorded at the rural Mwnci Studios in Carmarthenshire and produced by Steffan Pringle, the track is a “fiery ballad of rage and mourning” that explores Welsh cultural loss and the historical discouragement of the language.
Fronted by the elemental vocals of Mari Mathias, the nine-piece collective continues to bridge the gap between ancient folklore and modern distortion. Following their debut ‘Chwyldro’, this latest release arrives via the label BWGiBWGAN (Ghost Disco), a home for their unique “psych-folk rock” sound. Drummer Luke Huw Llewellyn noted that the single’s blue-bathed artwork serves as a tribute to ancient Celtic ancestors, marking a powerful act of defiance and remembrance.

Ye Vagabonds - Danny (Official Video)
Ye Vagabonds’ new album All Tied Together deepens their reputation as one of Ireland’s most sensitive and skilful folk acts. Released in January 2026, the record gathers twelve original songs shaped by the Mac Gloinn brothers’ close harmonies, acoustic warmth, and a widening circle of collaborators. Reviewers highlight its emotional weight, noting how the duo turn lived experience into intimate, resonant art. The album balances progression and tradition: bigger in sound yet more personal in theme, rooted in place, memory, and the quiet power of craft. It feels like a culmination—whole, reflective, and beautifully wrought.
