Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 - Festival de jazz de Leverkusen 2024 - ARTE Concert
At the age of 9, Seun Kuti was playing in his father’s band. The legendary Fela Kuti was a Nigerian musician and political activist, regarded as the principal innovator of Afrobeat, a Nigerian music genre that combines West African music with American funk and jazz [*]
Seun (Oluseun Anikulapo Kuti) was born in 1983 and following his father’s death in 1997 took over the leadership of the band Egypt 80.
He has balanced his father’s tunes with his own, incorporating African traditions and reflecting the continent’s struggles. His debut album was released in 2008, and he achieved a breakthrough with the 2011 album “From Africa with Fury: Rise,” co-produced with Brian Eno. Seun’s music remains politically charged, and in 2022, he released an EP titled “African Dreams. [*]
Seun Kuti & Egypt 80' are on tour in UK and Europe until December.
Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head) is the 7th studio album by Seun Kuti & Egypt 80'.
Mari Boine - Dánsso fal mu váhkaran (Official Music Video)
Mari Boine turned 68 in November this year. A Norwegian Sámi singer who combines a form of Sámi Joik singing with rock music. In 2008, she became a professor of musicology at Nesna University College which is about halfway up the Scandinavian peninsula. But she was born in a small town right at the very north of Norway where the country meets Finland, Russia, and Sweden.
Alva is her 15th Album… sometimes a solo artist sometimes with other musicians – Her first was in 1991.
A genre-bending trailblazer with a taste for jazz, folk, rock, and world.
An artist whose music is inspired by and infused with her Sámi roots.
A woman who knows who she is, where she’s come from and what she stands for.
A music icon who has inspired indigenous artists the world over.
Mari Boine. She’s got soul.“It’s completely irrelevant what you call her music.
Her music blends seamlessly into the rhythms and sound picture of our times.
She could have sung her songs a thousand years ago or a thousand years into the future and still retained the same depth and resonance.
In other words, it is like Mari Boine’s voice reveals just the smallest sliver of eternity,” said one critic about her album Gávcci Jahkejuogo (Eight Seasons).“a good language to sing in, so rich for the voice”
When Mari Boine made her music debut in the early 1980s, she was an angry young woman. And she had every right to be. Christianity, repression of the Sámi language and the oppressive culture of “the big men down south” – these all weighed heavily on the mind of a girl raised in her native language but discouraged from performing traditional joik. After all, it was “devil’s work. [*]
