Album of the Week
During the week I was compiling lists and reading information about new releases puzzling over which album to feature this week. There is a lot of very good music around – as is normal this time of the year. In the background another new album by I name I didn’t recognise slowly attracted my attention and before too long, the lists had been abandoned and the choice made. It might be a little obscure, but it is this week’s album of the week.
SAHAD Luuma
Sahad is from Dakar in Senegal – Luuma is the album. Sometimes listed as Sahad and the Nataal Patchwork his music reflects a broad range of musical influences, and links between several cultures. Together, they is part of this tradition of young people who carry with them the new breath of African music. “Their music,” their publicity tells us, “Is at the crossroads between Malian blues, Afrobeat, rock and jazz which give birth to a kaleidoscopic sound.”
“"Luuma" means market in Wolof [a language of Senegal, Mauritania, and the Gambia, and the native language of the Wolof people]. This weekly and itinerant market exists throughout Senegal, mainly in rural areas.
“Through the hyperbole of the market, Sahad presents another way of making the world.
“The Luuma album tends towards a hybrid identity: purely acoustic tracks with psychedelic rhythms, or a deep sensitivity to a dazzling burst of energy. The artist deploys an "active utopia": between urban and rural life, between spiritual and temporal space: where the "multiple whole" forms Unity.”
Luuma is Sahad’s 4th Album – you can get it and the others on Bandcamp. On Soundcloud there are some free tracks.

New single and tour from AySay
I should have played more of the Danish/Turkish/Kurdish roots band AySay when they released their debut album in November 2021 Before the release of a new single Nerelisin I’ll be playing a track from Su Akar. But not the one below.
AySay will playing festivals throughout Europe over the summer, including Roskilde Festival (DK), Sinsal Festival (ES) and Les Escales (FR).

French drummer Anne Pacéo has just released S.H.A.M.A.N.E.S
“Her three Victoires de la Musique awards, “Jazz Artist of the Year” in 2019, “Jazz Artist of the Year” in 2016, “Jazz Revelation” in 2011, and her prolific discography have taken her to 45 countries on five continents. With six albums and an EP to her credit, Anne Pacéo plays with codes and styles, making it a point of honour to break down borders and seek out very particular alchemies between the musicians who make up her groups. [
“First spotted as an accompanist, she has been playing professionally since she was 19 years old with some of the biggest names on the French and international music scene. She has played with Archie Shepp, Rhoda Scott, Christian Escoudé, Marcel Azzola, Henri Texier, Andy Sheppard, Alain Jean-Marie, Philippe Catherine, Sandra Nkaké, Biréli Lagrène, Ibrahim Maalouf, Emmanuel Bex, Michel Legrand, Jeanne Added, Melissa Laveaux, China Moses, Mickael League (Snarky Puppy), Eric Bibb, Raphael Imbert …”

The Grammy Award nominated Cimarrón who play music from the plains of the Orinoco River formed in Colombia in 2000. They are led by Ana Veydó the singer, harpist and “strong woman” of the album name La Recia. She sent me an email earlier this week saying, “We are just releasing this week our new album La Recia, which means "the strong woman" and refers to my vision as a bandleader and producer (after the death of my husband and Cimarron co-founder Carlos Cuco Rojas) of an album that breaks down the stereotype of Colombian cowboy and honors our true indigenous origins. This new musical journey goes deeper into the ancient spirituality of the Orinoco and brings back forgotten sounds, such as the sound of Manguaré, a percussion instrument never recorded before.”
I’ll be featuring the album next week, but there is a taster in part 2 of the show this week
