Sunday nights at 10:00 and Tuesdays at 7:00.pm. Info on how to listen, programme notes and videos here.
Listen to last week’s show and see the running order on DavySims.com and find out more about the show. You can also listen to Part 1 and Part 2 on Mixcloud.
Music this week from Spain, Canada, Czechia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, 1975, Ireland, Norway, Hungary, Niger, Taiwan, Peru, Niger, France, Algeria, Egypt, Hungary, and Tunisia. And Ukraine
I don’t play a lot of Eurovision Song Contest music on Around the World – most of it doesn’t fit. A couple of years ago I found three tunes in the whole competition I could play, but I wanted to play this tonight – and regardless of the situation I probably have played it.
On 12 February when the world was a different place, the band Kalush and the song Stefania were chosen to represent Ukraine in the Eurovision Song Content. Here’s a video of that performance.
And this is the full – four hour – programme, too
A lot of good music comes from Ukraine. I’ve played much before and I’ll be playing more on this week’s show including 2 tracks from DakhaBrakha
Including:
Here’s their full performance at Glastonbury in 2016
—
I’ll also have a track from Dakh Doughters (not this one).
I’ll play an old favourite from Onuka - Zenit. The video below
The newsletter previewing Around the World is sent every week usually on Thursdays. You can subscribe here - and of course it is free - or you can catch up on the Blog usually published late on Sundays.
A couple of weeks ago I played a track from Colores by Pedro Makay (Facebook). He’s Spanish and Makay is such a familiar surname in these parts and I wondered out loud whether there was a connection.
Well, Pedro heard the show in Spain and dropped me a note to say, “To answer your query on my name. Makay is a little village on the French side of the Basque country in the Pyrenees. They make a very fine Pyrenean cheese there ... My father loved the place and had a certain emotional attachment to it and so the name Pedro Makay . Once again, thanks and all the best . Pedro Makay”
“Young Mi’kmaq fiddler and singer Morgan Toney is the latest signing to Ishkode Records, the new Indigenous record label run by ShoShona Kish of Digging Roots and Amanda Rheaume. They will release his debut album, First Flight, on March 25. Until then, we have this delightful new single and video for “Ko’jua,” which Morgan describes as a “song that has been here in Mi’kmaki for a very long time. Performing this song brings the community together. Toddlers, youth, adults, and Elders all gather in a circle to dance with one another, to create a space of peace. My variation of ‘Ko’jua’ sends the message that no matter where you come from, there is always a space for you in this circle of peace.” FolkAlly.com
He talks about it in this video
“Small Island Big Song is a music, film, live project featuring musicians across 16 island nations of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, creating a contemporary and relevant musical statement of a region in the frontline of cultural and environmental challenges. pinagsanga begins with a spoken-word piece in Amis language by singer-songwriter Putad's own family - four generations of Amis women, a matriarchal indigenous nation of Taiwan.” (YouTube)
There’s a whole lot more but one to finish this newsletter with.
It’s 50 years since Horslips released Happy to Meet, Sorry to Part and revolutionised Irish music.
Happy golden anniversary to all five members of The Four Poxmen of The Horslypse.

COMING SOON - AROUND THE WORLD - EXTENDED PLAY
As I was putting the show together the postman left in another couple of packages of CDs. In a month I get several packages – maybe 20 to 30 CDs in all, plus links to downloads, plus my own research. That is a lot of potential music for a weekly 2 hour show. And there is always some music that is great, but in this show – it just doesn’t fit. And other music which is very difficult to programme.
And I hate not being able to play it.
So starting on 1 April, I’m starting an online only show – only available on Mixcloud and through mu blog, of more difficult – often more challenging music. Music that deserves a bigger audience, but I just can’t fit it into the radio show.
So keep an ear out here and an eye on the blog and the news letter. Around the World Extended Play is on the way and the first show will be ready from Friday 1 April.
